The postseason magic was still very much alive in Citizens Bank Park in Astros vs Phillies Game 4. However, it was no longer the Philadelphia Phillies who were the recipients. Entering the game undefeated at home in the postseason, the Houston Astros pitched a combined no-hitter to even the series at two games apiece. With the series now becoming a best-of-three, which team will take pivotal Game 5?
This MLB betting preview for the World Series Astros vs Phillies Game 5 includes game info, starting pitchers, betting odds, trends and a prediction for tonight’s postseason matchup.
World Series Game 5 (Series tied 2-2)
Houston Astros (106-56, 51-30 Away) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (87-75, 47-34 Home)
Date: Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022
Time: 8:03 p.m. EST
Venue: Citizens Bank Park — Philadelphia, PA
Coverage: FOX
Astros: Justin Verlander (18-4, 1.75 ERA)
Phillies: Noah Syndergaard (10-10, 3.94 ERA)
It’s usually a pretty easy path to victory when your pitching staff doesn’t give up a single hit. It was made easier thanks to an opportunistic Astros offense that came alive in the fifth inning. The Astros scored all five of their runs in the inning after they started the inning of with three consecutive singles. Although Houston only had five hits combined over the other eight innings, that was more than enough.
Quite simply the pitching staff was elite. It’s nearly impossible for a staff not to in a game where they throw a no-hitter. With that said, this is an incredibly hot Phillies lineup. Astros starter Cristian Javier struck out nine and walked just two over six innings of work. He showed just how deep this Astros rotation is and how dangerous they will be. As the series progresses, Houston has clear advantage now with fresher pitchers and home field advantage again.
There isn’t much to say about Philadelphia’s offense other than it just not being good enough. While Javier had great command on Wednesday night, it is unforgivable for a World Series team to be held hitless. The Phillies looked lost from the jump and never recovered.
The pitching wouldn’t have mattered anyways but Aaron Nola once again struggled mightily. After giving up just one unearned run in over 12 innings across his first two playoff starts, Nola has now given up 14 earned runs in just over 12 innings across his last three starts. Whatever the problem is, it should be extremely worrying for Philadelphia. While no pitcher can be perfect, they clearly can’t rely on him should the series go to a Game 7.
