Alabama vs Clemson Prediction | March Madness Elite 8 Picks

After a relatively poor offensive performance against Grand Canyon, the Alabama Crimson Tide got back on track with a huge scoring output against North Carolina. Grant Nelson had his best game of the season, putting up 24 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. With Rylan Griffen adding 19 points on 5/8 shooting from three, the Crimson Tide shot 48% as a team from the field and 42% from three. After finding themselves down eight at halftime, the Crimson Tide really upped their game. It helped that North Carolina and R.J. Davis missed a lot of open shots, but the Tide outscored the Tar Heels by 10 in the second half. It seemed like every time UNC scored a bucket, Alabama inbounded the ball and pushed it down the court for an open basket. They once again got shots up on offense, with Griffen and Nelson making some huge shots. That is going to continue in this matchup against Clemson. North Carolina has the country’s eighth-ranked defense, so to see Alabama put up 89 points on them is a great sign. With Sears running the point, he is going to command a ton of attention, which should leave guys like Griffen and Aaron Estrada open to hit threes.

While the Clemson Tigers run through P.J. Hall, it has actually been Chase Hunter who has played the best basketball in the tournament. With scoring outputs of 21, 20 and 18 in the NCAA Tournament, Hunter has been the catalyst for the Tigers. Creating a great high-low with Hall has allowed the Tigers’ secondary scorers, like Joe Girard and Ian Schieffelin to find their grooves. Playing the inside game with Hall has been their best offense. Collapsing the defense down on Hall will continue to allow those shooters to find open spaces and shoot threes. If the Tigers continue to hit their threes, there is no reason why they can’t win this game. Clemson has also employed a strong 2-3 defense as of late. That zone has helped to neutralize the inside game of their opponents and with how high the guards play on the zone, has forced teams to take deep threes.

The win over North Carolina seemed like a great “get-right” game for an Alabama team that is so reliant on their offense. Alabama is one of the teams that seems like it could beat a strong 2-3 zone with its shooting, so it will be interesting to see if or when the Tigers change to it. I would guess at some point in the game, they will, due to their success with it in the tournament. With Hall’s dominance on the inside, it seems like Clemson has the advantage in the paint, but looking at what the Crimson Tide did to North Carolina having one of the best centers in the country, you have to wonder if Alabama’s defense can put together a repeat performance. While Sears is a great player, it is going to be Grant Nelson who will be the deciding factor in this game. Nelson has legitimate NBA talent and is going to be a major mismatch for Alabama to exploit. For our Elite 8 Alabama vs Clemson prediction, we are picking the Alabama Crimson Tide to win and move on in the NCAA Tournament.
