NFL Playoff Picture | AFC Playoff Standings
The AFC Playoff picture is a little more convoluted than what we see in the NFC. It is the dawn of a new day; the start of a new era. Or, maybe we are turning back the clock, since it’s the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots atop the NFL Playoff Picture in the AFC.
The other two divisions are a bit more up in the air; the Jacksonville Jaguars currently have hold of the AFC South, at 9-5. However, the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts are both a game behind (8-5), with the Texans having the tiebreaker there. It is a similar situation for the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6), who have a narrow lead over the Baltimore Ravens (6-7). Notably, these two play in Week 18.
As for the AFC Wild Card race, it’s the Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo Bills at 9-4, then the Texans are at 8-5. The Chiefs’ playoff chances are looking slim, not only due to the fact that they are 6-7, but they also have losses against the Texans and Bills, and they will face the Chargers this week.
Let’s take a look at the AFC Playoff picture. Remember, the top seven teams in the AFC Playoff standings are in, and winning the division rewards the team with a top-four seed.

Chiefs Playoffs Chances | Chiefs Playoff Scenarios
The Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff chances are on life support right now, and that’s because they need to beat everyone in their division, then get some help from others as well. Before Week 15 kicks off, The Athletic NFL Playoff Simulator gives the Chiefs a 12% chance to make the playoffs, given their 6-7 record and the tiebreakers they possess (or don’t). The ESPN Power Index views the Chiefs’ odds to make the playoffs pretty identically, at 11.9%.
In Week 15, the Chiefs will face the Los Angeles Chargers, who currently have a Wild Card spot in the AFC Playoff Standings. A win over the Chargers would raise the Chiefs’ playoff odds to 18%. If the Colts and Texans both lose their games this week as well, the Chiefs’ percentage rises to 23%. So, they are not dead yet.
Looking at the Chiefs’ playoff scenarios, if they win out, their odds to make the NFL Playoffs would sit at 46%. That shows you how much help they need. Added to those wins, a Broncos win over the Chargers in Week 18 would skyrocket the Chiefs’ playoff chances to 72%. If the Texans beat the Chargers as well, the Chiefs would be close to locks to make the playoffs as a Wild Card.
So, if you are wondering how the Kansas City Chiefs can make the playoffs, essentially, the Chiefs need to win all of their games while the Chargers lose them. Of course, there are other playoff scenarios as well, but given the schedule and health factors for LAC, this is their best bet.

Following Week 15, the Chiefs have a “trap game” on the road against the Titans before another home game against the AFC-leading Denver Broncos. Kansas City will end the season on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders.
