After coming into the season on somewhat of a sour note, the Auburn Tigers have rolled through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. They have used a combination of Tahaad Pettiford and Miles Kelly to take down Alabama State and Creighton. Seeing players not named Johni Broome and Chad Baker-Mazara lead the Tigers to victory is nice if you are a Tigers fan. While Broome and Baker-Mazara have not played badly by any means, there has been an obvious point of emphasis from opposing teams to take those two players away. While I expect Michigan to come in with a similar game plan defensively that we saw with Ryan Kalkbrenner against Broome, they do not have the outside game to hang with Baker-Mazara and Kelly. The encouraging part of the Tigers has been Pettiford. Coming off the bench, Pettiford has totaled 39 points.
For Michigan, it has been Roddy Gayle and Tre Donaldson who have been the spark plugs. We know that the two-headed monster of Danny Wolf and Vlad Golden is the strength of this team, but getting good guard play has allowed Michigan to win two battles against UC San Diego and Texas A&M.
In most of their games, Michigan certainly has the advantage on the inside. While the height is there in this one, Broome’s post game and footwork are too strong to keep the Michigan big men out of foul trouble. The Wolverines will need a-plus games from their guards and, with Auburn’s 1-Seed ranking in the tournament, the great play from Donaldson and Gayle will end in this one.
