This rematch of last year’s National Championship game poses a similar outlook to that game. UConn is one of the most efficient teams in the country on both ends and San Diego State relies on their stout defense to win them games. The one main difference is that Aztec forward Jaedon LeDee has emerged as a true superstar and one of the best players in college basketball. Last year, San Diego State relied on defense and their backcourt to score enough points to win them games. This year, they have LeDee averaging almost 22 a game and carrying most of the offensive load.
For UConn, it’s more of the same as what we’ve seen the last 12 months. A juggernaut on both ends that excels in just about every area of the game. Their backcourt of Tristen Newton and Cam Spencer provides shooting, playmaking and rebounding. Stephon Castle and Alex Karaban complement each other perfectly on the wing with their blend of athleticism, shooting, slashing, and defense. To piece it all together, center Donovan Clingan is a dominant force around the rim and one of the most impactful two-way players in the sport.
If San Diego State is going to pull off this upset, they are quite simply going to need UConn to not be at their A-game.
