Gonzaga and Arkansas face off in the first matchup of the Sweet 16. Both teams have been tested in the West Region.
I discussed previously how Memphis was a tough matchup for Gonzaga, due to their size and athleticism. This proved to be true, but they pulled out the win. Arkansas was tested by the defensive-minded New Mexico State, in a game where points were tough to come by.
The biggest issue for the Bulldogs in their first weekend was shots not falling. This was the case around the NCAA Tournament, due to the ball selection that players were not used to. Given a few extra days to practice with this ball, we should expect Gonzaga to shoot a higher percentage, especially at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Arkansas’ offense has been inconsistent all season long.
During the stretches Arkansas goes cold, Gonzaga will pull away. I like them to cover the spread in this matchup as a result. I also lean towards the over, despite the total being set nice and high.
