Today in Sports History: 3/20 – Tom Brady Signs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Today in sports history (2020), Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady was one of the most coveted free agents in NFL history at the time of his release from the New England Patriots. This ended a 20-year run for Brady as the leader of the New England Patriots.

In New England, Brady finished with six Super Bowls, numerous records and an image of being one of the greatest football players of all time. Coming to Tampa Bay, many were skeptical about Brady’s ability to still play. He immediately dispelled those thoughts as he won a Super Bowl in his first season in Flordia.

Brady retired after the 2021 season, but he has already announced that he is returning from this short-lived retirement. The real question surrounding Brady now is how many more Super Bowls can he win? With seven under his belt and turning 45 in August, can Brady get to 10?

Tom Brady Turns Tampa Bay into Contenders

The story surrounding the Bucs was how do they win with Jameis Winston at quarterback. Winston was always seen as a player who had the potential to become a franchise quarterback, but his decision-making held him back. This was proved by his 30 TD, 30 INT season in 2019. With Tom Brady being a free agent and Winston being a wildcard, the Buccaneers felt more comfortable rolling with the proven winner rather than the wildcard.

With that being said, Brady’s first season in Tampa Bay was nothing short of great. After signing Brady, the Buccaneers signed Rob Gronkowski to reunite the two stars. Adding Gronkowski to a lineup of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, the Bucs looked ready to compete. During the season, Brady finished with 4,633 passing yards and 40 touchdowns. Brady then lead the Bucs to four playoff wins, over Washington, New Orleans, Green Bay and Kansas City. This resulted in Brady’s seventh Super Bowl win.

The Buccaneers fell to the eventual Super Bowl winning Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the 2021 playoffs. How will Brady fare in his first season back from retirement in 2022?
