Atlanta Braves Preview
The Braves’ loss in Game 1 of this NLDS series was no fault of starting pitcher Charlie Morton. The veteran picked up right where he left off in last year’s postseason with the Tampa Bay Rays, striking out nine and allowing just two runs over six innings. Unfortunately, the star-studded Braves lineup failed to score two runs over the course of the full game. Morton took a hard-luck loss as a result. Joc Pederson accounted for all of Atlanta’s offense with a pinch-hit home run in the 8th inning. That knock was one of just four hits that the Braves managed in Game 1. The majority of tickets are on the Braves ahead of Saturday’s Game 2 despite the fact that they are once again MLB betting underdogs.
Drawing the Game 2 start for Brian Snitker’s club is Max Fried. He was one of the most consistent components of Atlanta’s pitching staff during the regular season. Fried compiled a 14-7 record to go with a 3.04 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 158 strikeouts. The final two months saw Fried be particularly sharp. He pitched at least six innings in all 11 of his starts in August and September. Fried allowed no more than four runs in any of those outings and the Braves emerged victorious in ten of them. The southpaw even threw two complete-game shutouts, including one on the road against the San Diego Padres just two weeks ago.
Milwaukee Brewers Preview
While the Brewers had all they could do to scratch out two runs against Charlie Morton, their own starter was even better in Game 1. Corbin Burnes fanned six Atlanta batters and only allowed two hits over six shutout innings to earn the win. While Milwaukee only led 2-1 going into the ninth inning, closer Josh Hader is pretty much automatic in save situations. Pitching has been the strength of Craig Counsell’s club all season long. That certainly continued in Game 1. A two-run homer by Rowdy Tellez in the 7th inning provided all of the Brewers’ offense in the series-opening victory.
Drawing the start for the MLB betting favorites in Game 2 will be Brandon Woodruff. Statistically, he had a terrific season, finishing with a 2.56 ERA, 211 strikeouts and an extremely impressive 0.96 WHIP. The one outlier to that line is Woodruff’s final win-loss record of 9-10. He faltered a bit during the final three months of the regular season. The Brewers only won four of the 14 games that Woodruff started from July-September. However, it’s really hard to pin the blame on him in the majority of those defeats. He received next to no run support in the vast majority of those outings. The Brewers scored two runs or less in eight of those games. Another one was decided in extra innings well after Woodruff had been removed from the game. All told, his win-loss record is a bit deceiving. The Braves did get to him in a late-July matchup though. Woodruff surrendered three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings on that occasion.
