As training camps across the NFL begin to kickoff, we must brace ourselves with the bad news that comes with it. However, we did not believe this bad news would begin this morning. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network has reported that Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers has suffered a major injury.
Let’s take a look at the Cam Akers injury update.
Cam Akers Injury: Suffers Torn Achilles
A week before training camp begins, it has been reported that Cam Akers has torn his Achilles while training. The second-year running back at a strong end to his rookie season, and all signs pointed to a big year for him.
The Rams used a running-back-by-committee approach last season, which frustrated many of their fans. The frustration stems from the team drafting Akers in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, then failing to use their backfield weapon. He was slowly unleashed throughout the entire season. However, he finally broke onto the scene in Week 14, when he ran for 171 yards against the New England Patriots.
Rams Backfield Following Cam Akers Injury
Last season, the Rams’ backfield committee consisted of Malcolm Brown, Darrell Henderson and Cam Akers. Brown is now in Miami and Akers appears to be lost for the season.
This thrusts Henderson back into the starting lineup. Henderson made 11 starts last season, running for 624 yards and five touchdowns, while catching 16 passes. He should have a big role in this new Rams offense. However, due to his 5-8, 208-pound frame, he is not built to be a bell cow. The Rams will look to free agency to add another piece to this backfield. Could the Todd Gurley wear the Rams uniform once again?
