With the start of OTAs and the NFL Draft and free agency in the rear view mirror, now is another opportune time to evaluate your dynasty fantasy football roster and look for potential upgrades. In addition to Aaron Rodgers’ tenure with the Packers being in Jeopardy (see what I did there?), Deshaun Watson and Julio Jones are also demanding to be traded. With these exceptions though, we are starting to get a better idea of what depth charts will look like for the start of the season.
Let’s look at some more buy low and sell high dynasty fantasy football recommendations here to target in trade offers and take advantage of market timing.
Dynasty Fantasy Football Quarterbacks Buy Low/Sell High
Buy: Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins
Last season, Tua Tagovailoa was coming off of a devastating hip injury. Midway through the season, he was called upon to replace Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was a fan favorite and team leader. The results were not good, averaging 14.05 fppg (fantasy points per game). Yet, there are several reasons for optimism to buy low on Tagovailoa.
First, the Dolphins signed Will Fuller from the Texans to come in and complement DeVante Parker. Then, they drafted Jaylen Waddle, who was Tagovailoa’s teammate at Alabama, to give him yet another weapon to throw to. Secondly, despite his rust from not playing in a game for almost a full calendar year and not even getting a full preseason in with his new teammates, he did show flashes last season. With another year removed from his injury and a much-improved supporting cast, look for Tagovailoa to emerge as a low end QB1 this season who can be had on the cheap, if you need insurance for say Aaron Rodgers or Deshaun Watson.
Sell: Ryan Tannehill, Titans
On the other side of the coin, this has been a tough offseason for Ryan Tannehill, as he lost his offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, after the Titans finished fourth and sixth the past two seasons in offensive efficiency. Tannehill also lost his second and third leading receivers, in Corey Davis and Jonnu Smith, who accounted for over 37% of their passing offense production. While Tannehill has made the most of his opportunities as a Titan and been a solid QB1 since taking over the starting job, these losses will have a negative impact on his numbers this season, likely dropping him to the QB2 range. Now if the Titans do upgrade their receiving corps, say by trading for Julio Jones, then move Tannehill back up into QB1 range. Still, shop him around to see what kind of offer you can get.

Dynasty Fantasy Football Running Backs Buy Low/Sell High
Buy: Najee Harris, Steelers
Najee Harris is a three down running back who is going to a team in the Pittsburgh Steelers that has always leaned heavily on their RB1. Now, throw in an aging Ben Roethlisberger, who is looking to check it down as much as possible to prolong his career. Harris, who was the first RB drafted, is going to step in and as a bell cow and with plenty of underneath targets to pad his stats. He will be at least an RB1 with his utilization, and very likely by the time the dust settles, a top-10 RB.
It will very likely take a trade up for the first overall pick in your rookie draft to make this happen, but he will be worth it. Throw the owner with the first pick an offer with a star who either has question marks surrounding him or a little less tread left on the tires and your first rounder to see if you can pull it off before he starts to move up in ADP. Remember that the owner of your leagues number one pick likely holds that pick for a reason.
Sell: David Montgomery, Bears
After finishing last season as the RB4 in PPR leagues by averaging 25.7 fppg over his last seven games, David Montgomery helped lead many fantasy teams to a title. With the Bears drafting Justin Fields, who in some combination with Andy Dalton is almost certain to be an upgrade over last season, the future appears to be bright. However, if we dig a little deeper into Montgomery’s final stretch of last season, we see that he had five matchups against bottom six run defenses, several of which had already decided to see how high of a draft pick they could get for their efforts, or lack thereof.
Tarik Cohen was also out for much of last season, which led to Montgomery seeing more usage in the passing game. Now that Cohen is back and Damien Williams is as well, that receiving production will fall. If you can get someone to give you RB1 value in return for Montgomery, he makes for a nice sell high option.
Dynasty Fantasy Football Wide Receivers Buy Low/Sell High
Buy: D.J. Chark, Jaguars
This one seems like it should be easy, right? The Jaguars just drafted one of the most pro-ready QB prospects to come along in years and D.J. Chark is the top WR on the team. Last season, with a combination of Gardner Minshew, Mike Glennon and Jake Luton at the helm, Chark finished as the WR48. Despite the offseason signing of Marvin Jones and the emergence of Laviska Shenault Jr., Chark remains the most talented WR on the roster and his potential with Trevor Lawrence is going underlooked. If you can get him for the price of a WR3, where he is currently ranked, he makes for a nice buy low. If he slots in as the WR1 and Lawrence delivers on his potential, this will reap huge rewards going forward.
Sell: JuJu Smith-Schuster, Steelers
Another year with Big Ben at the helm, and his increasingly conservative ways does not bode well for JuJu Smith-Schuster. The Steelers also added a very capable receiver in the aforementioned Najee Harris. JuJu also still has to contend with Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and now Pat Freiermuth for targets. Johnson became the favorite WR over last season, and Claypool is just getting started, coming into his second season. While Smith-Schuster did have 97 catches last season on 128 targets, he only finished with 831 yards. Luckily, he scored nine touchdowns. He is still being valued as a fringe WR2 despite his target share likely dropping. So, if you can trade him for comparable value, this would be a good time to do so.
