NASCAR Qualifying Results: FireKeepers Casino 400 Starting Lineup at Michigan International Speedway

June 7, 2026

The NASCAR race today at Michigan International Speedway had no shortage of drama from start to finish. A chaotic afternoon featured multi-car wrecks, a strong Chevrolet effort in the middle stages, and yet another worst-to-first drive from the hottest driver in the sport.

From a polarizing Michigan native making headlines to Toyota reasserting its dominance when it mattered most, here are three key takeaways from the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400.

Takeaways From FireKeepers Casino 400: Who Won the NASCAR Race Today?

Denny Hamlin Goes Worst to First Again

If last week at Nashville felt like a one-off miracle, Michigan made it clear that this is simply who Denny Hamlin is in 2026. For the second consecutive week, the No. 11 started from the rear of the field and drove to victory lane in the NASCAR race today.

The backstory began Saturday when a tire went down during practice, leaving the underside of the car with damage. Hamlin admitted that it was somewhat surprising he was even able to post the pole-winning lap in qualifying given the condition of the car. The team made the call to repair the damage overnight — a decision that forfeited his starting spot and sent him to the rear for unapproved adjustments. It was déjà vu from Nashville, where a penalty for jumping the start had produced the same result just seven days earlier.

Hamlin spent much of Stage 1 buried in the back half of the top 25, going largely unnoticed. A caution early in Stage 2 gave him the opportunity to deploy a two-tire strategy on pit road, vaulting him into the upper teens. He maintained position from there — but more drama was coming. On a restart, Hamlin was caught up in a multi-car wreck and left facing the wrong direction on the frontstretch. He escaped without damage and continued on.

Hamlin’s path to the front opened up in Stage 3 when a caution involving Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell spawned a red flag to repair outside wall damage. On the ensuing restart, Carson Hocevar and teammate Daniel Suarez battled side by side for the lead and neither could clear the other. Hamlin built a massive run on the outside, dove to the inside of Hocevar, and passed both drivers in a single move.

From there it was never in doubt — the No. 11 in clean air was absolutely dominant, crossing the line more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place Erik Jones.

The win carries added significance on the all-time ledger. Hamlin now sits tied with the late Kyle Busch at 63 Cup Series victories. His burnout down the length of the frontstretch with a KB flag in hand was a moment of pure emotion — a beautiful tribute to a legend the sport is still grieving. Meanwhile, with Tyler Reddick, suffering his first DNF of the season in the NASCAR race today, Hamlin has now cut the points deficit between the two to just 51.

Michigan Natives Rise to the Occasion

Some drivers make a bigger deal out of racing at their hometown track than others. For years, people seemingly referenced any track in the eastern time zone as a hometown venue for Martin Truex Jr. — so the label can lose meaning quickly. However, in the NASCAR race today, two of the three in-state natives in the field put on quite a show for their home fans.

Carson Hocevar’s day was eventful from the opening lap to the checkered flag. With Hamlin sent to the rear, the No. 77 inherited the pole and led the opening laps of the race — a moment amplified by back-to-back early cautions for Connor Zilisch, whose rookie season struggles continued. After losing several spots due to strategy on pit road, Hocevar restarted on the fourth row when disaster struck.

Kyle Larson got a poor jump at the front of the line and the cars behind stacked up. Rather than check up, Hocevar tried to squeeze a last-second move to the inside of John Hunter Nemechek — the push sent Nemechek spinning and collected several cars in a major wreck. Tyler Reddick and Austin Dillon both sustained terminal damage. As Hocevar continues to make enemies among fellow drivers for his aggressive style, his fanbase continues to laud his willingness to go for it at all costs. An incredibly polarizing driver is developing right before our eyes.

The drama didn’t end there for Hocevar. He had two additional near-crashes while racing hard for position later in the race, and after losing the three-way battle for the lead on the final restart, he hit the wall and dropped several spots. He drove all the way back to second before the car faded — ultimately crossing the line fifth.

Erik Jones, meanwhile, continued his recent surge of momentum in quieter but equally impressive fashion. Forced to start at the rear as well, Jones worked his way to the fringes of the top 10 by the end of Stage 1 — doing so noticeably faster than Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and others who shared his starting position. A lack of short-run fire-off speed and the race’s frequent cautions limited his overall ceiling, but when the final green flag run extended, Jones made his move. He passed everyone on the track not named Denny Hamlin and crossed the line second.

The NASCAR race today saw both Michigan natives made strides in the points standings. Hocevar jumped two spots to seventh — now on the fringes of the top six deemed essential when the Chase reset occurs. Jones climbed three more spots to 18th, suddenly just two positions outside the final Chase transfer spot with races remaining in the regular season.

Toyota Fails to Dominate — But Wins the Day

The NASCAR race today at Michigan offered several surprising developments, chief among them being the absence of Toyota drivers at the front of the field for prolonged stretches. Some of that absence was the result of on-track carnage, but Chevrolet in particular put up a formidable fight.

Chase Elliott won Stage 2 and led a race-high 67 laps before an eventual DNF ended what had been a genuinely dominant afternoon. The Hendrick and Spire Chevrolets are clearly finding more speed with the manufacturer’s new body style — a trend worth monitoring as the season progresses.

Toyota – 88
Ford – 0

When the pay window opened, however, Toyota flexed once again. Hamlin’s dominant drive to victory after taking the lead — winning by more than 11 seconds — speaks for itself. Behind him, Erik Jones’ runner-up and Bubba Wallace’s third-place finish gave all three Toyota race teams a top-3 result. Chase Briscoe rallied from a struggle-filled afternoon to finish tenth, ensuring Toyota led all manufacturers in top-10 finishes. Riley Herbst and John Hunter Nemechek added 13th and 14th place runs to round out an impressive manufacturer showing.

Even Tyler Reddick’s DNF came with a silver lining — he secured the Stage 1 victory, which was oddly his first stage win of a season in which he has already won five races outright. Including the All-Star Race, Toyota has now won 10 of 16 NASCAR Cup Series events in 2026. The Chevrolet resurgence is real and worth watching, but the Camry is still the car to beat.
