Kansas Basketball Preview | College Basketball Betting Picks
After a tough start to Big 12 play this season, Kansas has really started to settle into the Jayhawks brand of basketball they are synonymous with. They are one of the top teams in the Big 12 and can beat any team on any given night. While plenty has been made of projected first overall pick Darryn Peterson and questions concerning his drive and true commitment to the team, that hasn’t stopped Kansas in the slightest. Since their embarrassing 11-point loss on the road to West Virginia, the Jayhawks have rattled off eight straight wins, including wins over Iowa State and previously undefeated Arizona in their last outing.
Kansas’ winning streak is far from being thanks to a weak schedule. In their last four games, they have beaten three ranked opponents in Texas Tech on the road, along with BYU and Arizona at home. A big reason for their recent success, especially in such high-stakes games, is their deep offense. Kansas is usually known for a brand of basketball where the elite talent on its roster takes over, and they can almost coast to victory on any given night. This team is different, though, as any one of their starters can be trusted to put up double-digits each night, and they kill their opponents with good fundamental basketball when needed. In their last three ranked wins, their starting five averaged 74 points per game. Even without a deep bench, so to speak, they can count on their starting lineup to do more than their part on any night. Even if one player struggles, the other four easily pick up the slack, making them tough to slow down.
Iowa State Basketball Preview | College Basketball Betting Picks
The Iowa State Cyclones are a really weird team to try to get a read on. They started 16-0 before dropping two straight on the road to Kansas by 21 and Cincinnati by nine. While the Kansas loss is certainly excusable, losing by 21 is not, nor is following that up with a loss to a Cincinnati team that currently stands at 13-12. The Cyclones then rattled off five straight before dropping another stinker of a performance, losing to an unranked TCU team on the road 62-55. The Cyclones have yet to lose at home, but the performances they have put up randomly against bad teams have been slightly concerning.
Everybody in the building on Saturday understands how much is riding on this game for Iowa State. Even with just three losses this year, with all those coming in conference play, even one more loss in conference play (with Arizona and Houston both currently having just one conference loss) erases all hope of a regular-season conference title. On top of that, Iowa State is currently projected as one of the lower two seeds in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. A loss to Kansas would see them fall to the three-seed line. While there are still plenty of games left to be played, it’s important that the Cyclones make the most of a big opportunity on their home court.
Kansas vs Iowa State Prediction | College Basketball Betting Picks
This is a hard college basketball prediction to make because there are so many unknowns with both teams. Darryn Peterson should be a distraction for Kansas, but he hasn’t been one so far. Iowa State should have the firepower to beat Kansas, but they have looked abysmal in their last matchup. Overall, expect Iowa State to get the job done, but Kansas to cover the spread. Kansas’ offense is just too good to beat by a fair margin and their defense is surprisingly underrated. While Iowa State doesn’t lose at home, it would be surprising to see them flip the script so much that they turn a 21-point loss into a win by seven or more points. Pick Iowa State to win, but Kansas to cover the spread. With Kansas having plenty of offensive prowess, the safer bet looks to be Kansas to cover.
