We recently found out that Kansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams joined the long list of NFL players opting out of the 2020 season, due to COVID-19 concerns. While rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire is expected to be the clear starter heading into the season, the Chiefs could use further depth and experience behind him.

These are the three best running back replacements for Williams that are still available.

3. LeSean McCoy

This may be the most likely choice for the Chiefs, as LeSean McCoy was a part of last season’s Super Bowl team and he has a long history with coach Andy Reid. But while McCoy has a track record of strong play in the NFL, he had his ups and downs last season. McCoy never reached 100 total yards in a game, and he also had a couple costly mistakes, including fumbles. Still, he knows the offense and is a cheap, veteran running back that can easily be brought back in.

2. Lamar Miller

Lamar Miller’s 2019 season ended before it could even begin, with the then-Houston Texans running back tearing his ACL in the preseason. There have been no negative reports about his rehab, so will assume the past year has treated him well and he is healthy enough to play football. In 2018, Miller ran for 973 yards, and he caught 25 passes as well. Much like the other two on this list, Miller is a dual-threat in the backfield, which is something Kansas City puts a high value on.

1. Devonta Freeman

The best running back available, and one that seems like would thrive in Reid’s system, is Devonta Freeman. The long-time Atlanta Falcons running back totaled 1,066 yards in 14 games last season, doing just as much damage through the air as he did on the ground. He would be a terrific mentor to a young dual-threat back, like CEH, and Freeman is also a player Reid will be able to trust in big moments. Depending on the dollar amount attached to his name, look for him to work out for the Chiefs very soon and possibly be the Damien Williams replacement.
