Edwards-Helaire Fantasy Breakdown

After Clyde Edwards-Helaire torched Alabama for 180 total yards and four touchdowns in November, many began to recognize him as one of the best in the draft class. After a perfect landing spot on the current Super Bowl champions, Edward-Helaire’s fantasy value is also one of the best.

He was a vital piece for an LSU Tigers team that won the National Championship, and now he is expected to start in the backfield for another contending champion. CEH was the only running back to be taken on Day 1 of the NFL Draft, hinting at just how much the Chiefs love him and how valuable Edwards-Helaire could end up being in fantasy.0

Edwards-Helaire Fantasy Outlook

CEH landing with the Kansas City Chiefs is the perfect situation for fantasy. We’re talking about a Patrick Mahomes-led offense that in 2019 had the sixth-most yards and fifth-most points. This was with Mahomes missing two games. In 2018, with Mahomes healthy the entire year, they were first in both categories.

Lets look at how Andy Reid’s best fantasy running back fares since 2003 (hint: it’s great):

In 11-of-17 seasons, an Andy Reid-coached team has produced an RB1. As recently as 2017, rookie Kareem Hunt led the league in rushing and finished as the RB4. Despite being a rookie, he had 272 carries and 53 receptions. We have the blueprint for CEH right in front of us. Hunt still finished as an RB1 in 2018, when he only played in 11 games. Reid wants to throw the ball to his running back. CEH just recorded 55 receptions in 2019, showing his ability as a receiver.

Not only was CEH taken in the first round, he was hand-picked by Mahomes. General Manager Brett Veach asked Mahomes to give him a name on draft day, and he said Clyde. That’s all it took. They absolutely love this guy., and so did Joe Burrow. He constantly talks about how talented he is. He even said Clyde was the best athlete on the 2019 National Championship team on the Dan Patrick Show.

A first round investment proves he is the Chiefs running back of the future. Yet, people are worried about Damien Williams. I think Williams is more talented than he gets credit for. He was even arguably snubbed as the Super Bowl MVP, but he is not the guy the Chiefs want to rely on. He only had 111 rushes and 30 receptions last year, almost getting out-touched by an aged McCoy (101 rushes/28 receptions). Williams was thrust into a prominent role because they lost Hunt, but now the Chiefs found their Hunt replacement in CEH, which will make Edwards-Helaire a fantasy stud.

Edwards-Helaire ADP

Many see the fantasy potential of Edwards-Helaire, as he is currently being drafted at the 2.08 spot, as the RB13 in PPR leagues, per Fantasy Football Calculator. If you want him, you’ll have to pay up. He’s going after Austin Ekeler and Aaron Jones, but before Todd Gurley and Leonard Fournette.

In a dynasty startup, I’ve seen him go as early as the 1.11 spot, and I don’t mind it. You’re getting the Chiefs starting running back alongside Mahomes for years to come. He is a home run pick as the 1.01 in dynasty rookie drafts.

Edwards-Helaire’s fantasy value will make him a staple on championship teams for the next few years. Acquire him wherever you can.
