WWE RAW Highlights From 3/7
A Whole Freakin Hour of Tag Team Goodness
RAW being three hours can sometimes be a real drag. For example, see WWE using 10 seconds of a social media post in the second hour to tease the whole social media post which they showed in the third hour to recap an event we all saw on social media over the weekend. But one solution? Donate the whole first hour to one great championship match and two awesome promos. This hour told a simple story in three parts.
First, Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens confidently claimed their shot to WrestleMania would be the Tag Titles, all while teasing the desperation that lay just under the surface. Second, Alpha Academy defended their tag gold against Rollins & Owens and RK-Bro in an awesome match that went for close to 30 minutes. The action was fast-paced and fun throughout in this triple threat, highlighted by Randy Orton putting everyone “through” the announce table and the electric closing sequence seeing an RKO out of nowhere, a finisher bonanza, and Riddle stealing the win from Seth Rollins.
And finally, we get two wonderful moments in stereo. On one hand, a triumphant Randy Orton heartfully tells Riddle that winning the belt with his only real friend was the most fun he’s ever had in the ring. On the other, Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens are shown crying and despondent on the outside and in the back. A match that had amazing stakes with some of the most over talent in all of WWE, culminating with an outcome that truly has me wondering where we go from here. As good as RAW’s been in a long time.
RAW Cares about NXT
I wish I could’ve written this point two years ago when NXT was the peak of the wrestling world, but for better or worse, it’s clear that the main roster cares more about promoting NXT now than they have in a decade before. Ciampa has been coming on the last month to promote a feud with Dolph Ziggler, getting time to shine in front of a crowd and build a fanbase. Before that, Grayson Waller was on every week to fight against AJ Styles. And this week, Bron Breakker debuted to help Ciampa and got a pretty massive reception.
This type of back and forth exposure between the more developmental brand and RAW is smart both for marketing and for talent development. Ciampa and Breakker feel like huge deals now, and any main roster talent who comes to NXT feels gigantic as well. It’s a great balance they’re currently striking, and most importantly it seems to indicate they might not just ditch these guys when they come up full time. Hopefully.
WWE RAW Lowlights From 3/7
Why was Jerry Lawler here?
I do love me some King, but this was really bizarre. First, Miz and Logan Paul got cheered basically this whole segment with some hometown pop, before fellow Clevelander Lawler came out. This whole promo was a little about Miz and Paul’s feud with the Mysterios, but Lawler didn’t talk about that at all. No, instead he came out, said woo Cleveland, then when he proposed a Cleveland Mania someday, Miz said that was a dumb idea. And… that was it.
This feud continues to really meander, and having Lawler out just to look dumb was a really weird choice as well. Especially since Miz got cheered the whole time, only to “get his heat back” with a this town sucks joke. I’d be more than happy with them not being on TV for a couple of weeks before heating up this rivalry again, because it already stale and Mania is a month away yet.
Edge is Blue
Small point, but just because Edge is moodier now, doesn’t mean he needs to have blue jazz club lighting on him during his entire promo and entrance. That is all, thank you.
