NFL OTAs are here, and it may have made you ask what exactly are NFL OTAs? To start, OTAs stand for organized team activities. Teams around the NFL are getting together to work with their team for the first time this season, installing different packages and seeing the potential of their new players.
Are NFL OTAs Voluntary?
The biggest question fans will have about NFL OTAs is whether or not they are voluntary. When your favorite player doesn’t show up, it certainly raises a couple of eyebrows. But yes, OTAs are fully voluntary. Teams are also unable to have live contact.
How Long Are NFL OTAs?
Every team’s OTAs are 10 days long and split up into three different phases, per the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Teams do have the ability to say when their OTAs are, and some teams have them during three sets of days, while other teams like to spread them out a bit more. However, OTAs for every team must end prior to June 17th.
Media members are also able to meet with players during OTAs and watch some of their work, giving fans their first look at this year’s team.
What Happens During These NFL Offseason Programs?
Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, NFL offseason OTAs are split up into three phases. Phase one includes meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation, which occurs during the first two weeks.
During the next three weeks, phase two has on-field workouts, which may include individual or group instruction and drills. Again, no live contact is permitted.
Phase three occurs during the final four weeks, and it includes 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, with no live contact.
