Western Kentucky has had a great season thus far under third-year head coach Tyson Helton. On offense, the play runs through Bailey Zappe, the transfer from Houston Baptist. He has put up some crazy numbers this year. In regular season play, Zappe has thrown for 4,968 yards to go along with 52 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. Plain and simple, the Hilltoppers are a passing team and will have to find some kind of balance to win the game.
Running back Noah Whittington has only carried the ball 90 times this season, but he’s averaging five yards per carry. On the outside, Zappe can throw to pretty much anyone with success. The Hilltoppers have six players that have caught five or more touchdowns this season, which is pretty crazy.
On the defensive side of the field, the Hilltoppers need to make a couple of stops to win the game. The defense has been solid at points this season, but has mostly been inconsistent. They are allowing nearly 410 yards against them per game, and that problem will need to be fixed before they hit the field on Friday night. One key thing about the Hilltoppers is they are a very quick-driving team. So, their defense is on the field a lot. They really need to chew up some clock at points during this game to come out with a win.
UTSA Football Preview
The Roadrunners walked away with their first defeat of the season, after falling in their last regular-season game to North Texas. However, they need to brush that loss aside if they want to have any chance of taking down Zappe and the Hilltoppers. On offense, their balanced attack is very impressive. Quarterback Frank Harris has passed for over 2,650 yards this season and thrown for 23 touchdowns to only five interceptions. However, their meal ticket is running back Sincere McCormick. He’s rushed for over 1,200 yards and has found the end zone 12 times this year.
On the defensive side, UTSA’s Rashad Wisdom is the emotional leader and the leader on the field. He leads the team in tackles, with 78. However, the Roadrunners will need to look to capitalize on Western Kentucky’s mistakes and turn them into points.
Overall, this should be a great game and a wonderful undercard for the Pac-12 Championship tonight.
