Week 13 NFL Power Rankings | DVOA Rankings Edition

Week 12 of the 2020 NFL season will forever be one to remember. With the action starting midday on Thanksgiving and still not being completed at the time of writing this article, it is no doubt the longest week the NFL has ever seen. I’ll reserve my heavily opinionated comments about the Broncos being forced to play without a quarterback while the NFL continues to push the Ravens-Steelers game back for Twitter and our fine FlurrySports livestream programs. At any rate, Week 13 is technically here, and there was once again plenty of shuffling in our Week 13 NFL Power Rankings.

DVOA Rankings Explained

After an elegant Thanksgiving narrative last week, these Week 13 NFL power rankings have more of a statistics and data flair to them. There are a ton of stats thrown around when discussing and comparing NFL teams and players alike. The real question becomes which statistics are the most trustworthy in truly helping us gain an accurate assessment of teams across the league?

From my experience, it’s hard to beat the DVOA rankings metrics of Football Outsiders. DVOA stands for Defense-adjusted Value Over Average and is the primary statistic of Football Outsiders’ expansive data efforts. DVOA breaks down every play from the entire season and accounts for variables such as down and distance, location on the field, score gaps, opponent qualities, and more. It’s a tremendous measure of overall team performance, as well as for the performances of each of the three main phases of a football team: offense, defense, and special teams. Each team’s DVOA ranking relative to all other NFL teams is also included in parenthesis. Read on to find out how your team stacks up. Perhaps these DVOA numbers could foreshadow future risers and fallers in the weekly NFL power rankings to come.
