It was clear to anyone watching Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night that the Warriors were playing with an edge. After all, Golden State’s championship hopes were essentially on the line. One of the key ingredients in the Warriors’ win was active hands defensively. Golden State forced Boston into committing 18 turnovers and came up with 15 live-ball steals for the game. This combined with a 40-24 points in the paint advantage and yet another fantastic third quarter fueled the victory.
While the win wound up being lopsided, the Warriors still have numerous concerns to address as the series shifts to Boston. Offensively, Golden State desperately needs someone else to step up in the scoring column alongside Stephen Curry. Jordan Poole was the team’s second-leading scorer in Game 2 and it took a couple of miracle shots for him to reach 17 points. A popular talking point between games is whether or not Klay Thompson is capable of being the same caliber of player as he was prior to his injuries. Andrew Wiggins was also much quieter offensively in Sunday’s game and could stand to be more consistent moving forward.
For the Celtics, although Jayson Tatum scored 28 in Game 2, hardly anyone else offered much of anything offensively. It was a stark contrast from their Game 1 win in which the C’s shot over 51% from three-point range as a team. While Derrick White continues to provide a massive impact off the bench, Boston has to be somewhat concerned with the status of the frontcourt. Shot-blocking center Robert Williams III was visibly hobbled by a nagging knee injury in Game 2 and played just 14 minutes.
