Today in sports history (1982), the Chicago Cubs picked up their 8,000th win with a victory over the Houston Astros. The Cubs were the first team in MLB history to reach the 8,000 mark. Since 1982, there have been 15 other teams that have totaled 8,000 wins. The 8,000th win for the Cubs came in their 15,337th game, which was their 107th year in existence.

First baseman Bill Buckner led the way hitting for the Cubs, going 3-5 with a double and an RBI. He also stole two bases. Dickie Noles picked up the win for the Cubs, picking up one run over 5.2 innings pitched. He gave up six hits and struck out two. The Cubs beat the Astros, 6-3 in Houston.

Chicago Cubs First to 8,000 Wins in MLB History

The Chicago Cubs began their existence as the Chicago White Stockings in 1870. Cap Anson was the first major star that Chicago employed. He joined the team in 1876. The team quickly became known as Anson’s Colts. In 1897, the team parted ways with Anson and the Colts were being called the Orphans. A new team in Chicago eventually took the name White Stockings, later shortened to the White Sox. Chicago was finally known as the Cubs in 1907.

Throughout their history, the Cubs have had an immense amount of talent. Some players to highlight are Ernie Banks, Anson, Billy Williams, Ryne Sandberg and Sammy Sosa. In total, the Cubs have won three World Series, with their most recent coming in 2016. Their title in 2016 was the first title in 108 years. The Cubs currently have 11,087 wins, which ranks them third behind the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. With the Cubs struggling of late, who really knows when their next championship season may be.
