Today in sports history (1990), The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI. To this day, this is still one of the biggest and most influential matches in WWF or WWE history.

Aside from record-breaking attendance at WrestleMania (67,678) and it taking place in Toronto, WrestleMania VI will forever be remembered for “The Ultimate Challenge,” which is what Hulk Hogan coined the match after the Royal Rumble.

The Ultimate Warrior Defeats Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI

Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior crossed paths in the 1990 Royal Rumble. Afterward, we needed to know whether Hulkamania or the power of the Warrior was the strongest in the business. Thus, this historic match was created. Hogan had clearly been the top guy in the WWF for the past several years. However, Warrior had been gaining popularity, which is why this match made sense and was so big.

Not only were The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan two of the biggest wrestlers and stars on the planet at this time, but they were also both current champions, with Hogan being the WWF Champion and Warrior having the WWE Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship.

Warrior Wins WWF Championship

The Ultimate Warrior emerged victoriously. However, Warrior had to give up the Intercontinental Title afterward, due to rules prohibiting a superstar from having two at once. An eight-man tournament was held for the championship, which Mr. Perfect won.

Of course, we can draw comparisons to WrestleMania 38 this weekend. Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns are the main event, though the winner will hold two championships.

The Hulk Hogan vs The Ultimate Warrior WrestleMania VI match was named the 1990s “Match of the Year.” We will see if Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns can be as impactful.
