Today in sports history, one of the greatest coaches in NFL history began his dynasty. Bill Belichick was signed by the New England Patriots on this day in 2000.
Belichick began his coaching career as a special assistant with the Baltimore Ravens in 1975. He now patrols the sidelines of the Patriots, using his defensive background to help him to six Super Bowl victories. He got his first head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns before moving to the Jets, then the Patriots.
After Bill Parcels stepped down as head coach of the Jets in 1999, Belichick assumed the role. At his press conference, Belichick resigned as the head coach of the Jets and immediately took the head coach position for the Patriots.
Ever since Belichick got to New England, the Patriots have been the best team in the NFL. With his partnership with quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots grew to be one of the best dynasties in sports history.
Bill Belichick Stakes his Claim for Greatest Coach of All Time
What Bill Belichick has accomplished during his time in New England has been nothing short of incredible. After the Patriots drafted Tom Brady in 2000, they won six Super Bowls. Belichick used his skills as a defensive coordinator as well as a general manager to compile a total record of 321-154, with 31 of those wins coming in the playoffs. Belichick holds the record for Super Bowl victories as a head coach as well as most Super Bowl appearances and playoff wins.
Forming the greatest coach/quarterback duo in NFL history, many people wonder if Brady or Belichick was the reason why the Patriots have been so good.
Belichick’s 244 regular season wins with the Patriots are more than quadruple the next highest for a Patriots coach. He led New England to 17 divisional titles, including 11 straight from 2009-19. The streak of 11 straight playoff appearances is the most in NFL history for any team.
Bill Belichick now faces the toughest test of his career, as he tries to get the Patriots back to prominence without Tom Brady. Can Belichick somewhat recreate the last 20 years with Mac Jones?
