Texas State Football is On the Rise

Despite the lackluster gains for practically their entire existence, Bobcat Nation can finally have validated pride in the Texas State football program. For the first time in a long while, the Bobcats can boast about multiple alumni at a time. Ranging from the Super Bowl-winning alumni from the ’80s to the current players in the NFL, XFL and USFL.

The new Texas State football head coach, G.J. Kinne, is creating hype by laying a new foundation for his program. You read that correctly: Texas State football is on the rise!

Texas State Football Players Going Pro

As you can see, the latest players to represent the Bobcats have found their footing in the new spring leagues of the XFL and USFL. Additionally, these stints have landed them training camp invites from around the NFL. Currently, there are a few former Bobcats around the NFL this year. Caveon Patton was in Indianapolis (training camp), Levi Bell is in Seattle (practice squad), and old-reliable David Mayo is still holding his own in Washington.

It is interesting to note that the current players in the NFL are all defensive, and the Bobcats should get credit for this. It’s up to Kinne to bring his new offensive explosion to San Marcos and send the best offensive prospects to the pros and level out the representation of the Bobcats.

Unprecedented recruiting class (50 signed and counting). Unprecedented donations increase. I’m trying really hard to have cautious expectations for #TXST, but is it finally happening? https://t.co/7S24Xhoe1N

Building A Program

The addition of Kinne is no small gain for the bustling program. With all the hype and excitement, it’s becoming quite evident that there’s a storm brewing in San Marcos, and it’s going to be taking names this year. Donors are finally contributing to the Texas State football program and committing to giving Kinne and company all they will need to unleash the beast in the Hill Country.

Plus, as per the tweet above, Texas State is signing a record number of new recruits to enlist in its ranks. This is something that Spavital’s staff struggled mightily with. For context, the previous administrations, helmed by Larry Teis, were the bane of many fans’ existence. This would never show up, except when required, could never take the blame, and failed to deliver. Even after trying to make the splashy hire of Jake Spavital, Teis still couldn’t give much to boost his flagship athletic program.

Ultimately, his shortcomings led to the demise of his job and the jobs of his hires. Which, in turn, showed recruits that San Marcos was not a good landing spot if they were serious about pursuing a football career. But, with new Athletic Director Don Coryell and G.J. Kinne at the head of the ship, it appears smooth seas are ahead of the refreshed admin.

Rising Texas State Football Program Needs To Prove It This Year

As pointed out by the previous evidence, Texas State football is clearly on the rise. However, they do have quite a formidable crucible ahead of them. Playing non-conference opponents in the Mountain West, Jackson State (Deion Sanders’ old program), Big 12 and AAC is no easy feat for a “Fun-Belt” team, but it looks like the Bobcats are poised to scratch a few folks throughout the year. And like every other program this year, they will have to prove they are a capable adversary to be reckoned with in not only the Sunbelt Conference but also in the realm of college football as a whole. Kinne is certainly deserving all of the hype he has received with this head coaching gig in Division 1 football being the peak of his career, at the moment.

The hidden gem in the Hill Country has been making some transfers, signing recruits, and increasing donations. Kinne has had the golden touch to every program he’s been with, so let’s kick back, cheer them on, and watch the Texas State Bobcats season unfold!
