Duke and Tennessee couldn’t have looked any different their first games in the tournament. Tennessee outlasted Louisiana 58-55. Tennessee struggled mightily to score points and were lackluster at best when Santiago Vescovi wasn’t on the court. It’s clear that he runs the offense and he is incredibly important to them. The Volunteers will live and die by his play.
Duke on the other hand took it to Oral Roberts from the jump on their way to a 74-51 drubbing. Not only was the shooting stroke there for Duke, but their defense was incredible. They held Max Abmas to just 12 points, well under his 22-point average.
Duke has been on a tear lately while Tennessee has struggled to look competent. It was a shock to many when Tennessee received the higher seed than Duke and both teams’ first game would seem to support that confusion.
If Duke can get Vescovi into foul trouble, or just control him as they did Abmas, they should easily be able to deal with Tennessee. The Volunteers would need to turn around their play immediately to even have a shot in this game. Duke should be able to cover a small spread.
