Tennessee Titans Biggest Needs Heading Into the 2020 NFL Draft

The Tennessee Titans were the darlings of the NFL Postseason this past year, getting hot at the right time. Not many saw the playoff run coming for a Titans team that went 9-7 in the regular season. Now, they have the opportunity to take the next step, if the Titans fill their draft needs.

Expectations will be much higher in 2020, on the heels of last year’s success. The quarterback switch from Marcus Mariota to Ryan Tannehill early last season paid off in a big way. Of course, tailback Derrick Henry is the star of the offense and receiver A.J. Brown caught fire down the stretch of his rookie 2019 campaign. Coach Mike Vrabel has proven to be one of the NFL’s best, instilling a “never-give-up” mentality in Tennessee. The Titans will be picking later in the NFL Draft than most likely anticipated, but given the deep class, the Titans will still have ample opportunity to add to the roster and fill their draft needs.

Titans Biggest Draft Needs

Cornerback

The Titans weren’t a particularly strong pass defense last season, ranking 21^st overall in adjusted efficiency per Football Outsiders. The outlook for 2020 is still very much up in the air, with corner Logan Ryan still among the unsigned free agents available. Whether Tennessee is willing to invest in Ryan when they already have the bloated contract of Malcolm Butler on their hands remains to be seen. Adoree’ Jackson is the team’s other corner, and he has two years left on his rookie deal. Adding a cornerback early would help to fill one of the Titans’ biggest draft needs.

Dream Pick: Damon Arnette, Ohio State (29^th overall)

Defensive Line

The Titans surely have their eyes set on bolstering a defensive front that was greatly weakened with the trade that sent Jurrell Casey to the Denver Broncos. The team did sign linebacker Vic Beasley in free agency, but he won’t be enough to replace Casey alone in terms of pass rush capabilities. Tennessee ranked 13^th in team sacks last season, with 43, and also had a top-10 efficiency against the run. For those numbers to be maintained, or better yet, improved upon, the Titans will need to target a stout defensive lineman.

Dream Pick: Jon Greenard, Florida (61^st overall)

Running Back

The Titans made the controversial decision this offseason to pay quarterback Ryan Tannehill the big bucks while locking running back Derrick Henry down under the franchise tag. It is arguable who the most important piece to the offense is, but the move falls in line with recent NFL contract trends that reward quarterbacks much more than running backs.

There is the possibility that Henry could hold out into the upcoming season to protect his health while he waits for a new long-term deal. The Titans must prepare themselves for this, which is why running back is among the biggest NFL Draft needs for the Titans.
