The NFL Playoffs continue Sunday with another trio of Wild Card Round matchups. A pair of familiar postseason foes will get the day started, when the Baltimore Ravens clash with the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. This battle between the 4-seed and 5-seed in the AFC NFL Playoffs bracket is a rematch of last year’s Divisional Round matchup, which went in favor of the Titans. Despite being the lower seed, the Ravens have the NFL odds in their favor for this matchup, listed as modest road favorites.

Ravens vs Titans NFL Playoffs Overview

Both Baltimore and Tennessee come into this year’s NFL Playoffs with recent form on their side. The big question facing the Ravens as field goal-favorites on the road is whether or not they can reverse their recent head-to-head history against the Titans. In addition to being upset in last year’s playoffs, Baltimore fell again to the Titans at home during the regular season this year. John Harbaugh’s crew will look to turn the tables on Mike Vrabel this Sunday as the Titans host the latest installment of this series.

Ravens Overview

One would have to go all the way back to the first Wednesday of December to find the last time the Ravens lost a game. After being without several players in that game due to the virus, including quarterback Lamar Jackson, Baltimore went on to win their final five games and enter the postseason with plenty of momentum. While Jackson and the strong play down the stretch of rookie running back J.K. Dobbins were vital, it was the Ravens’ defense that really stood out. Baltimore has held five of their last six opponents below 20 points, and four of them to 14 or less. Aside from a Monday night shootout against Cleveland, one would have to go back to the Ravens’ overtime loss to Tennessee to find the last time a Ravens’ opponent surpassed 20 points.

Titans Overview

Simply expecting Baltimore to shut down the Titans offense as they have the majority of opponents this season is far from a sure thing. Few teams have been able to contain Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, and Tennessee’s potent attack this season. The unit has performed so well that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is a heavily sought-after head coaching candidate for several teams this offseason. The Titans ended the year by winning five of their final seven games. They rebounded nicely from a blowout loss at Green Bay in Week 16 to beat Houston and win the AFC South Division on the final Sunday of the regular season. The major concern for Tennessee heading into the NFL Playoffs is a defense that gave up the 28th most yards (398.2) and 24th most points (27.4) on a per-game basis this season.

There has been a passing of the torch in the Ravens backfield pecking order this season. Veteran Mark Ingram has seen his touches greatly reduced as rookie second-round draft choice J.K. Dobbins has become the team’s lead ball-carrier. The Ohio State product saw double-digit carries in each of the Ravens’ final six games in which he played, including 15 against the Titans back in Week 11. He had 70 rushing yards in that game and comes into Sunday’s Wild Card showdown riding high after a 160-yard, 2-touchdown effort against Cincinnati in Week 17. I like Dobbins to maintain his status atop the Ravens backfield and exceed his NFL props rushing yardage total.

After steady production in the early portion of the season, Corey Davis became very much a boom-or-bust player down the stretch. Davis has been held under 40 yards in three of Tennessee’s final four games. Davis only caught one pass for three yards in last year’s playoff meeting, a game where Ryan Tannehill only attempted 14 passes. The Titans’ focus offensively is still running the ball with Derrick Henry. While they’ll almost certainly throw more than last year’s game, I’m not convinced Davis will be involved enough to exceed 64.5 receiving yards.

Picking both NFL props yardage totals correctly would win you 3x your buy-in amount.

Ravens vs Titans Prediction

The NFL betting market has not drifted very far from the opening lines for this Ravens vs Titans Wild Card matchup. An opening spread of Ravens -3 hasn’t deviated more than a half-point away. Meanwhile, the opening total of 54.5 has held firm throughout the week. Book reports indicate that both sides have garnered sharp action ahead of this matchup. 53% of public bets are currently on the home underdog Titans according to oddsFire.

While it’s hard to lay points against an explosive offense like Tennessee’s, I’m inclined to back the Ravens in this NFL Playoffs matchup. Baltimore enters the postseason with loads of momentum. Lamar Jackson has been playing well, and if there’s any team capable of slowing down the Titans’ attack, it’s the Ravens. As the more balanced team with revenge on their minds, look for Baltimore to get the job done and advance in the AFC playoffs.

When it comes to the total, I’m going to take a stab on the Under. I expect the Ravens defense to make a statement on Sunday. With both teams leaning on their rushing attacks, the game could be shortened significantly. It took overtime for the regular season meeting to reach 54 total points scored. Unless we see extra time again on Sunday, my handicap points to the Under as being the correct play.
