Las Vegas Raiders Preview
Down 14-0, it would have been very easy for the Raiders to quit on their season-opener. Instead, Las Vegas stormed back, capping off the comeback with an overtime victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The win was much to the delight of the Sin City faithful who packed Allegiant Stadium for the Monday night contest. Now, the Raiders will look to maintain that kind of energy on the road this week as NFL betting underdogs.
Derek Carr overcame severe inaccuracy issues in the first half to finish with over 400 yards passing. Star tight end Darren Waller caught 10 of his whopping 19 targets for 105 yards and a score to lead the Raiders’ skill players on offense. Bryan Edwards and Hunter Renfrow combined for over 150 yards receiving while Josh Jacobs scored two rushing touchdowns. Defensively, not much was expected of the Raiders coming into the year. While the unit will likely still rank in the bottom half of the NFL, it was at least encouraging to see them stiffen in Week 1. Maxx Crosby stood out with a pair of sacks.
Pittsburgh Steelers Preview
The Steelers managed to flip the script on the same Buffalo Bills team that routed them in primetime last season. Pittsburgh’s defense completely shut down the highly-regarded Bills offense. Like the Raiders, the Steelers overcame a double-digit deficit to come away with a victory. The offensive numbers weren’t mind-blowing by any stretch, but the Steelers played a sound game all around to win outright as NFL betting underdogs.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger only had 188 yards passing in Week 1, but he avoided turning the ball over. It was a classic “game management” style effort from the veteran signal-caller. His lone touchdown pass went to Diontae Johnson, who led all Steelers wideouts with five receptions. Rookie running back Najee Harris was largely bottled up by the Bills’ defense. Despite several fantasy football managers freaking out about his poor stat line, better days are undoubtedly ahead for Harris. After getting paid last week, T.J. Watt highlighted a stifling effort by the Pittsburgh D with a pair of sacks.
