Philadelphia Phillies Preview

It was important for Philadelphia to hit Atlanta early and they did just that. They scored two runs in the first inning and continued to pounce on Max Fried who only lasted 3 1/3 innings. A throwing error from Max Fried added two runs to the Phillies’ total which would eventually come back to bite the Braves. While Atlanta’s bullpen only gave up one run, the damage was already done.

The Phillies’ bats were red hot and they will need to stay hot to continue to pose a real threat to Atlanta. For the most part, their bullpen was solid outside of Zach Eflin who gave up three earned runs in the bottom of the ninth. If the bullpen can be as solid as they were on Tuesday for the rest of the series, Philadelphia has a real chance to pull an upset, especially with a 1-0 lead.

Atlanta Braves Preview

While we can’t say for certain that it was caused by a longer time off than usual, the Braves came out of the gates sluggish. The bats eventually found their way but all of their runs came from the bats of Matt Olson and Travis D’Arnaud who each collected three RBI’s. The pair had four of Atlanta’s nine hits and outside of them, the offense looked lost. Overall, three players on Atlanta had seven of their nine hits. If their offense continues down this path, coming back from even a 1-0 deficit will be hard.

Pitching wise there isn’t much to worry about for the Braves. Max Fried was horrible, but outside of him, the staff looked great. The Phillies don’t have a very good pitching staff outside of Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler, so if their bullpen can limit Philadelphia’s output, they should be able to outlast them for most games this series. Atlanta’s pitching staff needs to be sharp on Wednesday or risk falling behind 2-0 with the series shifting to Philadelphia.
