Quinyon Mitchell Scouting Report

Strengths

While the names Cooper DeJean and Kool-Aid McKinstry jump off the page and are the more well-known corners in this class, Mitchell is not to be overlooked, and may even be the best of the bunch. He has a great burst to the ball, is a solid tackler, and can be utilized on the outside, slot, as a nickel or even as a safety if needed.

Mitchell has everything that you can’t teach. He has blazing fast speed, he’s agile, and he’s strong as well. At the draft combine, he ranked first overall amongst all corners. Although the quality of opposition is a fair question, he did a great job in the Senior Bowl, and looked solid in Toledo’s matchup against Ohio State in 2022. While Toledo did allow 77 points, Mitchell himself had some great coverage on Marvin Harrison Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. That Ohio State team, with C.J. Stroud leading the way, is as close to an NFL offense as you’ll see in college, and Mitchell did a good job overall as just a junior.

Weaknesses

The biggest weakness for Mitchell is his feel for some of the routes while in man coverage. While he is a very instinctive player who can break on the ball as good as anyone else, he can find himself too far out of position to make a play at times. In addition, while he does bring plenty of physical gifts, he will likely have a tough time against taller and more physical receivers on deep balls at the NFL level. He hasn’t seen nearly the amount of talent that some of the other prospects have seen on a regular basis, so there will also likely be a bit of a learning curve for him as well.

What to Expect From Quinyon Mitchell in 2024

Quinyon Mitchell is the most complete cornerback from a physical perspective that we’ve seen in a long time. He has the speed, acceleration, agility, and leaping ability to go up with the best of the best. The only issue for Mitchell is that he didn’t see much competition playing at Toledo in college. It seems a stretch that he can be a lockdown cornerback right out of the gate, but in half a season, he could easily show himself to be the most complete cornerback in this draft class and lead the way for Philadelphia’s secondary.
