In a surprising second day of the MLB playoffs, the New York Mets were the only team that forced a winner-take-all Game 3 in the Wild Card. The Mets drew first blood and put up four runs in the seventh inning to win Game 2 7-3. With so much on the line between two franchises that view the season as “World Series or bust,” which team will be the last to fall victim to the Wild Card round?

This MLB betting preview for the NL Wild Card MLB Playoffs Padres vs Mets Game 3 includes game info, starting pitchers, betting odds, trends and a prediction for tonight’s postseason matchup.

San Diego Padres Preview

Although they didn’t score seven runs like they did in Game 1, the San Diego Padres’ offense did its job. They drew six walks, gathered six hits and put up three runs in Game 2. Unfortunately for the Padres, Blake Snell ran into trouble early and had to be taken out with 90 pitches after just 3 1/3 innings pitched. The bullpen mostly held its own until it was busted wide open in the seventh.

Thanks to the beautiful performance from Yu Darvish in Game 1, the Padres’ bullpen will still be mostly rested. If they want to stand any chance however, they will need Joe Musgrove to go at least six strong innings. The magic number seems to be holding the opponent to three runs in this series. Musgrove is more than capable, but must start strong and get through three innings without any damage.

New York Mets Preview

In Game 2 the New York Mets saw their bats come alive. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso each cranked a home run and the whole team seemed to contribute offensively. They were able to show plenty of patience when needed along with the ability to string together some hits at a crucial juncture in the seventh inning.

No Mets fan will complain about winning Game 2 to stay alive, however manager Buck Showalter’s bullpen moves sure did raise some eyebrows. Closer Edwin Diaz locked down the seventh inning while Adam Ottavino was just short of finishing the last two innings. Diaz and Ottavino threw 28 and 35 pitches respectively in Game 2. If they are called upon in Game 3, can the Mets trust their arms to not give out at what would likely be a crucial point in the game?
