Injuries are a common part of football. However, there are way too many key injuries through two weeks of the season. The injury bug has struck the backfield especially. It has led to the NFL filing a grievance against the NFLPA, stating they have encouraged players to exaggerate or fake injuries. Regardless of the validity of injuries across the league, they have clearly affected the Week 3 NFL Power Rankings below.
The 32 teams below are ranked both on where they stand and where they are projected to go. This means that the injuries of today do play a major factor. The NFL is a short season and every loss matters.
With that being said, let’s jump into the Week 3 NFL Power Rankings!
The Philadelphia Eagles hold down the top spot in our Week 3 NFL Power Rankings. This is a team that has been inconsistent through two weeks. The defense has had moments of dominance, as has the running game. However, they have seen big leads fade in the past couple of weeks, and there is a rumor that Jalen Hurts is playing injured. While they may not be a dominant top team, they have answered enough questions to hang on.
The San Francisco 49ers found themselves in a tough battle with the Los Angeles Rams, but they hung on for the win. Brock Purdy isn’t the most talented quarterback in the NFL, but he is good enough to win games given the superstars around him. They should have an easy Thursday Night Football matchup with the Saquon Barkley-less Giants.
While it wasn’t a pretty win, the Kansas City Chiefs did get their first win of the season over another talented AFC team. Having Travis Kelce and Chris Jones back was clearly a big help. Now, if the supporting cast can pick up their play even a little bit, they will be back to Super Bowl contenders.
Speaking of Super Bowl contenders, the Dallas Cowboys are making a case. While they remain at the fourth spot in our Week 3 NFL Power Rankings, the Cowboys have been the most dominant team through two weeks of football. The defense has been brilliant while the offense has done enough to avoid criticism. Still, there is a question regarding their offensive depth. For now, they remain a top-five team, and they should enough another easy matchup against the Cardinals in Week 3.
The Buffalo Bills got back on track by embarrassing the Las Vegas Raiders. Josh Allen beat up on a bad defense, playing a near-perfect game. Home-field advantage should continue to be a big deal in Buffalo. However, Buffalo hits the road for a measuring stick game against the Washington Commanders this week. We will see if Allen can stay mistake-free against a tougher opponent.
While the Jacksonville Jaguars did lose last week, a one-score loss to one of the best teams in the NFL is hardly enough to panic about. There were plays to be made and points left off of the board for Jacksonville against Kansas City. We will see if they can iron out some of the kinks against Houston next week.
It was a close game, but the Miami Dolphins beat the New England Patriots in a prime-time game. The Dolphins’ speed kills, though it’s concerning that so much of their team success is built upon the athleticism of a few players. We will see if they can keep the pace as the temperatures begin to dip.
The Baltimore Ravens got a massive road divisional win against the Cincinnati Bengals. More importantly, they looked like they knew how to play football. The Ravens still have one of the most skilled rosters in the NFL. Given the injuries in the AFC North, Baltimore has a great opportunity to win the division and secure a top playoff spot this season.
The Seattle Seahawks bounced back in a big way, getting an overtime win in Detroit. The officiating has all football fans angry. Nevertheless, Seattle got what could be a big win over a team that was also competing for a wild card last season. As the Seahawks get a bit healthier, we should begin to see the team from last season.
The Detroit Lions lost their first game of the season. Again, officiating was a major issue. Still, every team in the NFC North lost, so Detroit remains in good standing as far as that goes. Losing David Montgomery is an issue, though it will lead to more touches for the talented Jahmyr Gibbs. The Lions will be tested this week against the Atlanta Falcons, who are a similar football team to Detroit. For now, they remain a top-10 team in this week’s NFL Power Rankings.
