The final NASCAR Cup Series race on the schedule, before the two-week summer break, takes place this Sunday. The Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 will be run at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. After Kurt Busch’s win last week, there is one less spot available to get into the playoffs on points. With five races to go, the heat is starting to turn up for the drivers on the bubble. With some bye weeks coming up, this might be the time to right the ship and get some momentum going before the four-race sprint to the finish.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway Overview

New Hampshire Motor Speedway opened in Loudon, New Hampshire, in June of 1990. The “Magic Mile” is a one-mile track that is banked at seven degrees. In July of 1990, the track would host the NASCAR Xfinity Series for the first time. The track drew enough fans to earn a NASCAR Cup Series date to go along with the Xfinity Series. July 11, 1993, marked the debut of the Cup cars at New Hampshire. The races were so good that the track would earn a second date starting in 1997.

Sadness Strikes NHMS

In 2000, tragedy struck New Hampshire Motor Speedway twice. In May, Adam Petty was involved in a crash that took his life. Less than two months later, Kenny Irwin Jr. was also involved in a wreck that took his life. These deaths would cause the Cup Series to run restrictor plates at the track for their races there.

NASCAR History Made In Two Straight Races

New Hampshire Motor Speedway ended one rule and welcomed another rule in two consecutive fall races. The fall 2003 race marked the last time that NASCAR “raced back to the line” for a caution. NASCAR saw how close some drivers came to hitting the stopped car of Dale Jarrett and decided to stop with the dangerous rule. The following week NASCAR froze the field at the caution.

Then, the fall 2004 race would start a new chapter in determining who would win the Cup Series championship. The first race of “The Chase” was held at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. In 2017, it was determined that New Hampshire would no longer hold a second race annually. Las Vegas Motor Speedway wound up taking over the fall race date.
