Mercury vs Wings WNBA Betting Game Preview

Phoenix Mercury Preview

As mentioned in the intro to this Mercury vs Wings prediction and preview, Phoenix has lost three straight coming into Saturday’s matchup. Following a three-game winning streak earlier in the month of June, the Mercury have now dropped four of five overall. Each of the last two losses came to Minnesota in a home-and-home schedule spot. The defeat before that came to the same Wings team that Phoenix will attempt to stop the bleeding against tonight.

Thursday’s loss at Minnesota was emblematic of how the majority of Phoenix’s season has gone to date. Tina Charles and Diana Taurasi showed out on the offensive end with 26 and 23 points respectively. Yet, the failure to generate any defensive stops wasted the two impressive scoring efforts. Add in the likes of Skylar Diggins-Smith and Diamond DeShields and the offensive abilities of this team are second to none. Unfortunately, the Mercury have been so bad defensively that even a superstar-laden roster has struggled to outscore opponents in the majority of games.

Dallas Wings Preview

The Wings managed to blow out Indiana on Thursday night to score their third win in the last four games overall. That triumph also enabled Dallas to level off its win-loss record at .500. After starting the season off by losing five of their first six home games, the College Park Center has been a bit friendlier to the Wings recently. Dallas has won three straight on their home floor with each of the last two victories coming by double-digit margins.

One of the key developments that bettors must monitor for tonight’s Mercury vs Wings prediction is the health of Allisha Gray. The Wings’ second-leading scorer on the season rolled her ankle in Thursday’s blowout win. Fortunately, she was able to sit out the majority of the second half thanks to the lopsided nature of the contest. Gray is officially questionable on the injury report ahead of Saturday’s contest. Arike Ogunbowale has to be licking her chops at the prospect of taking on another bad defensive team. The first time the Wings and Mercury got together this season, she dropped 37 points in Dallas’ win. Sharpshooter Marina Mabrey should also benefit from tonight’s favorable WNBA betting matchup.

Mercury vs Wings Stats

  • Phoenix is averaging 81.8 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 5 in the WNBA).
  • Phoenix is surrendering 86.9 points per game (PPG) this season (T-No. 10 in the WNBA).
  • Dallas is averaging 82.5 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 4 in the WNBA).
  • Dallas is surrendering 80.9 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 7 in the WNBA).

Mercury vs Wings Prediction

There comes a time when bettors must look past the high-profile names on a roster in favor of assessing the team’s performance as a whole. A reasonable outlook on the Mercury this season is that the sum of the individual parts has greatly exceeded the whole that this team has achieved on the floor together.

While blaming the absence of Brittney Griner is easy to do, Phoenix has a Hall of Famer at center in her place in Tina Charles. Add in stars like Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith and many are shocked that this team is six games under .500 approaching the All-Star break. It’s worth noting that the Mercury have very little reliable bench depth behind their star-studded starting lineup. As a result, head coach Vanessa Nygaard has yet to solidify a rotation to maintain production when the team’s stars exit for rest.

Although the injury status of Allisha Gray is something to monitor closely, the Wings are really the only side to consider backing for tonight’s WNBA betting matchup. Dallas has beaten Phoenix in each of two previous head-to-head matchups this season. The fact that Arike Ogunbowale is arguably the best pure scorer in the league today is a disastrous proposition for the Mercury’s awful defense.

Both Ogunbowale and Marina Mabrey are capable of getting hot from three-point range at any time. Considering that the Mercury have allowed opponents to hit 38% of three-pointers this season, this is a favorable matchup for the Dallas backcourt. Both Isabelle Harrison and Teaira McCowan should be able to make hay against a thin Phoenix frontcourt as well.

Mercury vs Wings Prediction: Wings -5 (-110 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
