WNBA Regular Season Game
New York Liberty (13-19, 5-10 Away) vs. Dallas Wings (16-16, 7-9 Home)
Date: Monday, August 8, 2022
Time: 8 PM EST
Venue: College Park Center — Arlington, TX
Coverage: NBA TV
The Liberty enter Monday night’s showdown having won four of their last six games overall. However, New York suffered a setback in their late-season playoff push on Saturday. The Liberty struggled mightily offensively in a road loss to Phoenix. This was partially a product of Natasha Howard having to exit after only playing 19 minutes with an injury. Howard, the team’s second-leading scorer on the season, is officially listed as doubtful for tonight’s WNBA betting matchup.
Despite this weekend’s setback to a fellow contender, New York is very much still in the running to secure a postseason berth. The Liberty enter tonight’s contest only a half-game back of both Atlanta and Phoenix. Those two teams currently occupy the seventh and eighth seeds. The Liberty also have two massive opportunities in front of them later this week as they close out the regular season with and home-and-home against the Dream.
The Wings are coming off a perfect week that saw them level their win-loss record at .500. After getting past a pesky Indiana squad in overtime on Saturday, the Wings have now won four straight and five of six overall. Thanks to this recent surge, Dallas is sitting pretty with regard to securing a playoff berth. In fact, a win over New York tonight would allow the Wings to officially clinch a spot.
The fact that the Wings managed to win all three of their games this past week is made even more remarkable by the fact that they largely did so without the services of their leading scorer. Arike Ogunbowale has averaged 19.7 points per game on the season, over six more than any other Dallas player. Despite being sidelined with an injury, the Wings still managed to take down both Chicago and Las Vegas, the top two teams in the WNBA. Center Teaira McCowan has been playing exceptional basketball while Marina Mabrey, Kayla Thornton and Allisha Gray have all stepped up as well.

Moneyline: NY: (+160) | DAL: (-180)
Point Spread: NY: +4 (-110) | DAL: -4 (-110)

Out: Betnijah Laney (knee)
Doubtful: Natasha Howard (ankle)
Out: Arike Ogunbowale (hip); Satou Sabally (knee)
Despite Arike Ogunbowale being absent from the lineup with an injury, the Wings were still able to stretch their winning streak to four this past week. Dallas’ wins over Chicago and Las Vegas, the top two teams in the league standings, both came with Ogunbowale not seeing the floor at all. Although she returned to play 25 minutes against Indiana on Saturday, a new hip injury has already seen the Wings rule their leading scorer out for Monday’s WNBA betting matchup.
While Dallas will once again have to try and find a way without Ogunbowale in Monday’s WNBA betting contest, the Liberty are also likely to be shorthanded. Natasha Howard injured her ankle in New York’s loss at Phoenix on Saturday. She is listed as doubtful for tonight’s contest. Just how important is Howard to the Liberty? Well, she leads the team in rebounding, steals and blocks. In addition to her presence defensively, she is New York’s second-leading scorer with 15.3 points per game.
Howard’s likely absence from the lineup tonight leaves Sabrina Ionescu as the only active Liberty player who has averaged more than 9.6 points per game this season. Case in point, it could be another ugly offensive showing from New York this evening.
While the absence of two standout players looms large, personnel factors are not the only things playing into our Liberty vs Wings prediction. Statistically, New York and Dallas both rank among the bottom four teams in average pace of play this season. Slow pace and poor shooting have been prevalent themes in this head-to-head series recently as well. The teams combined for only 153 and 152 points in their last two head-to-head meetings.
Liberty vs Wings Prediction: Under 161.5 (-110 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
