Liberty vs Sun WNBA Betting Game Preview
New York Liberty Preview
Although the Liberty come into this matchup off a loss, they have been showing tremendous improvement recently. New York has won five of its last eight games after starting the year off 1-7. Furthermore, the Liberty have been competitive against some of the top teams in the league even in defeat. Recent losses to formidable opponents in Chicago and Seattle both came by single-digit margins.
Of course, New York’s star duo of Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Howard continue to be the heart and soul of the team. With Rebecca Allen remaining sidelined for tonight’s game, Ionescu and Howard will once again need to carry the Liberty offensively to give the team a shot at scoring a massive WNBA betting upset. The question then becomes what other players will step up at that end of the floor? In Sunday’s home loss to Seattle, forward Marine Johannes actually led the Liberty in scoring with 23 points. Sami Whitcomb also scored 11 while providing a spark off the bench.
Connecticut Sun Preview
The Sun will also be looking to bounce back tonight after being defeated their last time out. Connecticut’s loss to Washington on Sunday carried the added sting of eliminating them from contention for the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Final. Despite that setback, the Sun still sit atop the Eastern Conference standings. Entering tonight’s home game, they have won six of their last eight contests overall.
As one of the deepest teams in the league when it comes to offensive talent, tonight’s game will be all about bouncing back on that end of the floor for the Sun. The 63 points Connecticut scored in Sunday’s loss marked the team’s lowest offensive output of the season. For that matter, it was the first time all year that the Sun failed to score 70 points in a game. Jonquel Jones had a monster double-double with 15 points and 16 boards. She was the only player to score in double figures for the Sun in the loss. Mind you, this is a team that boasts four players averaging 13 points per game or more on the season.

Liberty vs Sun Prediction
Since the calendar turned to June, the Liberty have looked like a completely different team compared to how they began the season. Not only has New York won five of eight games played this month, but all three of their losses have been by nine points or less. Full credit is due to Sandy Brondello and the rest of the coaching staff for picking up the pieces after a brutal 1-7 start to the year.
From a talent standpoint, the Liberty will be at a disadvantage tonight against the first-place Sun. That being said, New York’s lead duo of Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Howard are playing top-notch basketball of late. If the Liberty can get complementary scoring efforts from players like Marine Johannes and Sami Whitcomb like they did on Sunday against Seattle, they are more than capable of keeping tonight’s contest competitive.
Of course, the Sun certainly will put forth a better showing on the offensive end than they did in their loss on Sunday. Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner and Brionna Jones are simply too talented to post consecutive offensive duds. However, covering a double-digit point spread against a Liberty outfit that is playing with tremendous confidence is much easier said than done. That task will become even more difficult if the pace of tonight’s game winds up being on the slow end of the spectrum.
With regard to that sentiment, the Liberty average the second-slowest tempo in the WNBA. Only Washington, Connecticut’s opponent from this past Sunday, plays at a slower pace than New York. In general, the Sun have tended to play at a pace preferable to their opponent. Add in the sound defensive play of the Liberty in recent weeks and a winning margin in excess of 10 points is tough to envision.
Liberty vs Sun Prediction: Liberty +10 (-103 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
