The WNBA regular season has officially reached its stretch run. The push towards the playoffs continues on Friday night with an intriguing Eastern Conference matchup between the New York Liberty and Chicago Sky. These two teams just went head-to-head last weekend in the Big Apple. The Liberty managed to snap a five-game losing skid while also ending the Sky’s six-game winning streak in that game. The WNBA betting odds are clearly leaning towards a much different outcome with tonight’s Liberty vs Sky prediction.

Liberty vs Sky WNBA Betting Game Preview

New York Liberty Preview

As previously mentioned, the Liberty managed to snap a five-game losing skid by beating Chicago at home last Saturday. Prior to picking up that win, the Liberty had suffered three consecutive losses by 19 points or more. Dating back to June 30th, New York has been defeated in seven of nine games played. Five of the team’s seven losses over the span of nearly a month have come by double-digits.

Despite the perceived gap between these two teams in terms of talent as well as in the league standings, the Liberty have been very competitive the last two times they’ve faced. Sabrina Ionescu led the team with 17 points and fell just one assist and two rebounds shy of a triple-double line in Saturday’s win. Natasha Howard achieved her own double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. The duo of Ionescu and Howard has been New York’s top offensive threat all season long.

Chicago Sky Preview

While the Liberty have not played since Saturday’s matchup, the Sky did partake in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Final on Tuesday night. Despite having home court advantage in that game, Chicago fell behind big to Las Vegas right away and never could fully recover in a 10-point defeat. While that result did not count against them in the standings, the Sky technically enter tonight’s WNBA betting matchup on a two-game skid. This comes directly after a red-hot stretch that saw Chicago win 11 of 12 games.

Despite the outcome of last weekend’s matchup between these teams, Friday night’s WNBA betting odds have leaned heavily toward the hosts as their Liberty vs Sky prediction. Chicago opened up as a double-digit home favorite. However, star forward Candace Parker is questionable to play tonight due to an illness. The prospect of Parker missing the game has triggered a line move in favor of New York. Being without Parker would hardly be ideal for the Sky. On the bright side, Chicago boasts five other players averaging in double figures scoring on the season, led by Kahleah Copper at 14.8 points per game.

  • New York is surrendering 84.2 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 8 in the WNBA).
  • Chicago is averaging 85.6 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 2 in the WNBA).
  • Chicago is surrendering 79.5 points per game (PPG) this season (No. 4 in the WNBA).

Liberty vs Sky Prediction

Aside from last weekend’s upset of Chicago at home, nothing about New York’s recent form is very inspiring when it comes to making tonight’s Liberty vs Sky prediction. While laying a full 10 points with the Sky might have been a bit more daunting, the line move in response to the Candace Parker injury news has made the home favorite a much more attractive play.

Prior to losing in New York on Saturday, keep in mind that the Sky had won six straight and 11 of 12 overall. Chicago has already clinched a playoff berth and is now focused on capturing home-court advantage for the duration of the postseason.

Getting revenge against the Liberty will be a motivator for the Sky tonight. Chicago has dominated this head-to-head series recently winning four of the last five matchups. Furthermore, three of those four wins came by 20+ points. Tonight’s game also offers the Sky an opportunity to bounce back from a poor showing in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Final.

As far as the status of Parker, it’s far from guaranteed that she will actually have to miss Friday’s game altogether. Yet, even if she does, the likes of Kahleah Copper, Emma Meeseman and Courtney Vandersloot are more than capable of picking up the slack offensively. If Parker does play, the current WNBA betting spread of Sky -8.5 offers tremendous value relative to the pre-injury report line.

Liberty vs Sky Prediction: Sky -8.5 (-113 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
