There is only one game on Friday’s WNBA betting schedule, but it is a compelling matchup nonetheless. Two teams situated in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings will jockey for position when the New York Liberty head south to face the Atlanta Dream. Interestingly enough, this will be the very first meeting between the two teams this season. The WNBA betting odds have priced this game as a virtual toss-up. With such a small point spread, bettors essentially must pick the outright winner correctly for today’s Liberty vs Dream prediction.

Liberty vs Dream WNBA Betting Game Preview

New York Liberty Preview

At this point, it seems safe to say that the Liberty don’t want the month of June to end any time soon. New York started off the 2022 WNBA betting season with seven losses in their first eight games. When the calendar flipped to June, the team’s performance also flipped around significantly. Following an upset win over the Eastern Conference-leading Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, the Liberty have now won six of nine games played this month. Not only did that win come on the road but it defied WNBA betting odds that listed New York as a double-digit underdog.

Sabrina Ionescu continued to build upon her budding WNBA stardom on Wednesday with an 11-point, 11-rebound effort. She leads the Liberty in both categories on the season, as well as assists. Ionescu has literally done everything in the first half of this season right down to releasing her own shoe line! During New York’s early-season struggles, Ionescu and Natasha Howard were the only two players reliably contributing at the offensive end. That was hardly the case in the win two nights ago as Stefanie Dolson actually led the team with 16 points. Both Sami Whitcomb and Marine Johannes reached double figures for the second straight game as well.

Atlanta Dream Preview

The Dream were thrilled to get back home earlier this week after dropping every contest of their recent four-game road trip. Tonight marks the middle game of a three-game homestand. Atlanta started it off on the right foot by beating Dallas on Tuesday night. Although the Dream’s 12-point halftime edge was trimmed to a single bucket in the third quarter, Atlanta’s defense rose to the occasion in the final frame. The Dream only allowed nine points to Dallas in the fourth quarter as they secured the win. The performance only solidified the team’s top defensive efficiency ranking.

For as stout as Atlanta is defensively, the team’s offensive struggles must also be considered when deciding tonight’s Liberty vs Dream prediction. The fact that Maya Caldwell came in off the street and led the Dream in scoring on Tuesday night is impressive, no doubt. However, it also reflects the fact that this team is severely lacking in offensive talent. So long as Tiffany Hayes remains sidelined with her knee injury, rookie Rhyne Howard must continue to shoulder the majority of the scoring output. Aari McDonald and Cheyenne Parker are the only other players who have been with the team all season averaging in double figures.

Liberty vs Dream Prediction

When it comes to the trajectory that each of these teams seasons has followed thus far, the Liberty and Dream are polar opposites. New York got off to a horrendous start before proceeding to flip the script in the month of June. On the contrary, the Dream started out the season on a winning note, but have struggled lately when facing more quality competition.

While their seasons may be opposites to date, the two sides are actually very similar as far as statistics, strengths, weaknesses and style of play. The WNBA betting odds list tonight’s game total at an abnormally low 157 and for good reason. Coming into Friday’s matchup, the Liberty are dead last in the league in points scored per game. Atlanta is the next-lowest in that regard and ranks last in offensive rating.

Given how unproductive both sides have largely been on offense this season, it’s no surprise that each club has primarily hung its hat on playing strong defense. While the Dream have been at or near the top of the league in defensive rating all season, the Liberty have made significant strides at that end of the floor over the past few weeks. New York also averages the second-slowest pace of any team in the WNBA.

With two feisty defenses matching up, bettors would be wise to consider playing under the total. Since the WNBA betting odds viewing the contest as a virtual toss-up, laying a single point with the Dream on their home floor is the preferred side bet. With newly-signed players like Asia Durr and Maya Caldwell making immediate positive impacts at the offensive end, Atlanta has a few added wrinkles that the Liberty will have to contend with.
