These two teams certainly took very different paths to reach this Second Round matchup. While Crieghton needed overtime to overcome San Diego State in a thrilling game, Kansas took 16-seed Texas Southern to the woodshed in a 27-point blowout. The Jayhawks are perfect since suffering a road loss at TCU on the first day of March. Meanwhile, Creighton also is playing some of its best basketball in the month of March after reaching the Big East Tournament Championship Game.
When it comes to talent, Kansas presumably will have a massive edge in this NCAA Tournament showdown. The gap between the Jayhawks and Bluejays is particularly large on the offensive end. Creighton has struggled to score consistently all season long. Doug McDermott’s bunch has instead relied on stifling defensive play to achieve their success. While the Bluejays match Kansas in that they have four players averaging double figures on the season, leading scorer Ryan Hawkins has only averaged 13.8 points per game. That’s a far cry from Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji who checks in at 19.4 per contest.
Although the Jayhawks’ backcourt is probably the greatest strength of the team, the advantage that KU will have on the interior also cannot be overlooked. Creighton does not have a viable answer for David McCormick in the post. The Bluejays’ best bet on Saturday is to try and slow the game down to a crawl as far as tempo and hope that their defense can hold up in the halfcourt. Considering how sound Kansas is on the defensive end as well, the total of 139.5 feels a bit too high.
