Two Masters Tournaments in a matter of six months? How lucky are we?! To many of you, it may seem like we were just talking about Jordan Spieth in the Masters Tournament not long ago, and that’s simply because we were.
Even though we are all thankful the PGA found a way to host the 2020 Masters Tournament, it was just not the same. All feels right again, as it is April, the azaleas are in full bloom and we are set to hand out another green jacket from Augusta National.
Thursday, April 8: 3-7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Friday, April 9: 3-7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Saturday, April 10: 3-7 p.m. ET, CBS
Sunday, April 11: 2-7 p.m. ET, CBS
Even casual golf fans are familiar with the fall from grace Spieth has endured over the last few years of his PGA career.
Once destined to be the next big thing, Spieth saw his winning ways and #1 world rank disappear as quickly as it came. Despite going winless on the PGA Tour for almost four full calendar years (July 23, 2017 – April 4, 2021) he finds himself tied with his life-long buddy Justin Thomas as the third overall favorite to win the 2021 Masters Tournament.
To me, this is nothing but a result of recency bias. Spieth has always been a fan favorite, and the entire world of golf has been pulling for him to win another tournament. He finally did so with a -18 at the Valero Texas Open just this past weekend.
Though it was an impressive performance, and obviously builds momentum into Masters weekend, it seems difficult to justify him as a top-three favorite.
It is not just about his one victory though. Looking back through 2021 as a whole, you can see why bookmakers are so high on Spieth. In the five tournaments prior to his victory, he finished 4th, 3rd, 15th, 4th and 48th.
We also can’t forget that Spieth knows he can dominate Augusta. He is one of just five golfers to ever complete a wire to wire victory at the Masters.
Do I think he can win the Masters this year? In all honesty, no, I don’t. However, I do think his head is in the right place, and confidence and momentum are in his corner, which makes him dangerous and fully capable of a top-10 finish.
