Jaguars Draft Travis Etienne at No. 25 | Team Fit and What to Expect

With the 25th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Travis Etienne, running back from the University of Clemson. Jaguars coach Urban Meyer looks like he wants to surround newly drafted quarterback Trevor Lawrence with as many weapons as possible, and does so by drafting his teammate. Etienne is clearly one of the best running backs from this class and will work wonders for the Jaguars offense.

Travis Etienne Draft Profile

Travis Etienne has a special big play ability. He has a burst that separates himself from the rest of the draft class. Etienne also has great balance, showing the ability to stay on his feet through contact. He also proved he can be a weapon as a receiver, totaling 588 receiving yards his senior year.

His rushing numbers took a hit this season, when Clemson’s offensive line was worse. So, the level of competition can be questioned. Etienne also constantly looks to bounce runs and doesn’t take what’s there. He has the tendency to not finish runs strong, whereas teams would love the running back that grinds for the extra yard.

What to Expect from Etienne in 2021

The Jaguars are loading up on offense to maximize the potential for Trevor Lawrence. Acquiring Marvin Jones via free agency and Travis Etienne via the draft should open things up a bit on the Jaguars offense. Etienne will likely enter a running back by committee approach with James Robinson but will certainly be the third-down back and a solid receiving threat. The chemistry is already there between Lawrence and him, but the Jaguars will need to address the offensive line to allow him to reach his potential. He should be fighting with Najee Harris for the rookie RB1 all throughout 2021.
