Indiana vs Syracuse: NCAA Men’s College Cup Preview

No. 3 seed Syracuse has progressed after beating Creighton by 3-2 and is now looking forward to playing their first-ever NCAA National Championship.

Syracuse broke a 40-year-old program single-season win record and entered the national championship with an 18-2-4 record. After North Carolina in 2011, they are eyeing to become just the second team in ACC history to win division, conference tournament, and the national championship in a single season.

Syracuse opened the scoring chart in the 37th minute when Curt Calov found Christian Curti, who scored his first goal. Creighton equalized in the 50th minute courtesy of Duncan McGuire’s goal. Nathan Opoku gave his side the lead, but Creighton responded again and equalized in the 64th minute. In the 86th minute, Levonte Johnson scored the game-winning goal as he received a cross in the box by Nathan Opoku.

Syracuse’s forward pair Johnson and Opoku have played a vital role in Orange’s recent successes with their exciting attacking play. The duo has scored a combined 21 goals, registered 13 assists, and 55 points, the second-highest scoring Syracuse attacking pair since Ryan Raposo and Massimo Ferrin (60 points).

Abdi Salim and Christian Curti play anchor roles in the defense department. They have stifled opponents throughout the season by posting a 0.68 goals-against average, the best mark since the 2016 season. Moreover, they have kept 11 shutouts this season, joint-fifth in the nation.

Goalkeeper Russell Shealy, who stopped six shots in the semi-finals (joint season-high), is one of the main reasons behind Orange’s success this season as he has posted career highs in saves (69), save percentage (.812), shutouts (10) and goals against average (0.68).

On the other hand, No. 13 seed Indiana (14-4-6) knocked out Pittsburgh by 2-0 in the semi-final and advanced to the national championship game for the second time in the last three years. Ryan Wittenbrink scored the opener in the 14th minute, while Tommy Mihalic doubled the lead on the verge of the end of the first half.

They will be playing a title match for the 17th time in NCAA Tournament history, and with a win, they can become the only program to win a national title in each of the previous five decades, with the last winning in 2012.

They haven’t conceded a single goal through its four NCAA Tournament matches (360 minutes) and have become the first team since Maryland (2018) and the seventh all-time team to achieve this feat.

If we talk about their top performer, Wittenbrink is leading with ten goals and registered nine assists and 29 points.
