Houston’s aggressive defense and relentless ball pressure once again proved to be too much for a mid-major opponent. The Cougars turned Longwood over 18 times and cruised to an 86-46 victory. Now we will see how Kelvin Sampson’s vaunted defense translates in the NCAA Tournament against an offense that is on fire. Houston ranks top three in block percentage along with opponent eFG% and turnover rate. Jamal Shead is one of the best two-way playmakers in the country and LJ Cryer and Emmanuel Sharp are both sharpshooters that contribute enough offensively to make the Cougars favorites in just about every game they play.
Prior to the SEC Tournament, Texas A&M ranked 360 out of 362 teams in three-point percentage. They were a great rebounding team, played pretty good defense, and could score inside. They simply couldn’t make shots, an Achilles heel that seemed like it was going to keep them out of the NCAA Tournament. However, they’ve shot over 40% from deep in their four postseason games and are now looking like one of the better teams in the country. If the Aggies continue making shots, this is a very scary second-round matchup for Houston considering A&M is solid in almost all other areas of the game.
On December 16th, these teams faced off in a game that concluded with Houston securing a 70-66 victory despite 34 points from A&M guard Wade Taylor. If his recent performances serve as an indication of his potential in this upcoming game, he might replicate that impressive showing once again. These teams match up well with each other; both are very physical, great on the glass, and rely on their guards for the bulk of the offense. In the end, I believe Houston is the more disciplined defensive team and will make enough shots to win this game.
