The Pittsburgh Steelers injury report is one of the more notable ones for NFL Week 1. While most teams are entering their first game relatively healthy, the same unfortunately cannot be said in the Steel City, with multiple starters slated to miss the Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

Below, we will take a closer look at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ injury report for Week 1 against the Falcons. We will also discuss the significance of these injuries for this week and beyond.

Russell Wilson OUT, Justin Fields Starts For Steelers

One of the only teams with a true quarterback controversy this summer was the Pittsburgh Steelers. Russell Wilson won the competition ultimately because the Steelers simply needed someone to protect the football and not lose the game for the rest of the team.

However, Wilson has not been able to overcome his calf injury, leading to him being inactive for NFL Week 1. This opens the door for Justin Fields to start in his home state of Georgia. You can bet he will have a lot of family there to watch him play.

What Does Justin Fields Have to Do to Keep the Steelers QB Job?

Make no mistake, this is a massive opportunity for Justin Fields. There is no doubt that he is the more explosive quarterback option, and you could easily argue he is the more skilled option as well. However, it’s the mental mistakes and the overall lack of consistency in his NFL career that led to him being named QB2. But with an opportunity to beat a solid Falcons team, Fields could ditch the backup QB label before even really having it.

Back in Georgia, Fields has a lot to prove, as does offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. If the two can utilize Fields’ legs to extend plays and drives while also avoiding turnovers, there is a very good chance Justin Fields will be the starting quarterback beyond Week 1.

Roman Wilson, Isaac Seumalo Both Out

The Pittsburgh Steelers were a team rumored to be looking to add to their wide receiver corps this summer. In fact, they still may do it. However, a big reason why they wouldn’t is because of rookie Roman Wilson. The rookie out of Michigan could quickly emerge as the starting slot receiver, soaking up targets underneath for whichever quarterback is in the game. The Steelers have a long history of productive slot receivers, and Wilson has the skills to be the next one.

However, he will be out on Sunday with an ankle injury. But with him logging some practice reps this week, there is a real chance he will be back in the lineup as soon as next week. For now, Calvin Austin III will play slot, and he will showcase his quickness on the Atlanta turf this week.

Possibly, a more concerning injury is the pectoral injury that will keep Isaac Seumalo out. The Pittsburgh Steelers hope their offseason acquisitions will greatly improve an offensive line that has been terrible in recent seasons. The injury to Seumalo means the Steelers will have a different left guard, but there is optimism about his replacement, Spencer Anderson.

“I feel like Spencer has taken a great jump from year one to year two,” said tackle Broderick Jones. “I’m excited to see what he puts out there, what he’s able to do for us.
