After a compelling and injury-ravaged week, many might be left with tricky situations regarding their fantasy football lineups for Week 3. The one silver lining when it comes to the defense/special teams position is that a singular player injury won’t necessarily make or break the entire unit. That said, the combination of a tough Week 3 schedule and current ownership percentages makes it a tough slate for fantasy football defense streamers.
Fear not, for that is where we come in! Below, we identify a few D/ST fantasy football streamers candidates that are widely available and aim to keep you on the path toward fantasy greatness so that you can be the one hoisting your league’s trophy, championship belt or champ chain.
Players must be owned in less than 60 percent of ESPN leagues to be included in the fantasy football Week 3 D/ST streamers column. All ownerships will be provided and will reflect that of Wednesday morning, once waivers are processed.
Fantasy Football Week 3 Defense Streamers
Washington Commanders (29.3%)
Not only are the Commanders sitting with a 2-0 record, but they are also ranked fourth in fantasy football scoring per ESPN at the defense/special teams position through two weeks. One could argue that some of this might be matchup-based. After all, the Commanders have played a pair of winless teams thus far. However, it’s very impressive that Washington was able to finish as the seventh-ranked D/ST last week despite allowing 33 points.
Montez Sweat and Chase Young headline a nasty defensive front that piled up seven sacks in the win over Denver last week. On the season to date, they are tied for the league lead with 10 sacks and have also generated four turnovers. Admittedly, the Week 3 home game against the Buffalo Bills is a tougher matchup in terms of opponent. That said, Buffalo’s O-line isn’t stellar, and QB Josh Allen is turnover-prone. The Commanders’ pass rush will be a factor once again on Sunday.
Jacksonville Jaguars (35%)
Despite being ranked seventh in fantasy points scored at the D/ST position, the Jaguars are only owned in 35% of leagues entering their Week 3 divisional clash against the Houston Texans. The Jags have been a ball-hawking team in their first two games, coming up with two fumble recoveries and an interception in Week 1 against Indianapolis and again last week against Kansas City. The unit has also generated five sacks through the first two games.
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that the Jaguars held Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense to just 17 points in last week’s defeat. The Texans may have a bright future with C.J. Stroud at quarterback, but this is an offense that figures to struggle more often than not in 2023. Jacksonville’s secondary has looked vastly improved compared to a year ago. With a solid defense at all three levels, the Jags are worthy fantasy football streamers candidate for Week 3.
Seattle Seahawks (9.4%)
Most weeks, it would be tough to trust the Seahawks’ defense as a fantasy football streamers option. Seattle has surrendered 30+ points in each of its first two games and ranks only 23rd in fantasy football scoring on ESPN. Last year, the Seahawks were atrocious at stopping the run. While they have improved statistically in that area through two games in 2023, they have allowed well over 300 yards passing in both outings to date.
With all that being said, Week 3 is not most weeks thanks to a very favorable matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Frank Reich’s offense has been anemic through the first two games of the season. Whether it’s Bryce Young or Andy Dalton under center on Sunday, the lack of proven weapons in the passing game will still be a problem. If the Seahawks can contain Miles Sanders and the ground game, they are a sneaky option for fantasy and widely available at that.
