Fantasy Football Start ’em Sit ’em: Week 1 QBs

Start: Trey Lance at Bears

With Jimmy Garoppolo relegated to the bench, albeit still with the team, Trey Lance is getting the keys to the San Francisco 49ers offense. He draws a road matchup with the Bears to start the season. Last season, in two starts and a half of action, Lance flashed his potential by putting up 20.4, 15.6 and 20.1 across those three games. He passed for 598 yards in those three games, with four touchdowns, and rushed for 161 yards. It is the rushing yardage that provides a safe floor, so even if he struggles as a passer, he should still put up QB1 numbers this week. Start him with confidence.

Start: Russell Wilson at Seahawks

After his worst season as a pro, where he finished as the fantasy football QB13 on a per-game basis, Russell Wilson gets a fresh start in Denver. It just so happens he gets to play his former team on the road in his first start. Wilson started out last year well, but he missed three games with a broken finger on his throwing hand. When he came back, he struggled in his first couple of starts before finding his groove down the stretch. Now, with a talented cast surrounding him and a new coach who likes to pass, look for Wilson to have a nice game this week in a revenge spot.

Sit: Matthew Stafford vs. Bills

After hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in his first year in Los Angeles, Matthew Stafford is now a sit to begin the 2022 fantasy season. He has a couple of things going against him. The first is an elbow injury that sounds like it could linger throughout the season. The second is the matchup with a Buffalo Bills defense that last season gave up only 12.8 fantasy points per game (fppg) to opposing QBs. While it might be tough to bench him in the first game of the year, if you have another viable option, it would be advised.

Sit: Kirk Cousins vs. Packers

Last season, Kirk Cousins finished as the QB12, averaging 19.2 fppg. However, this week he will not finish as a QB1. While Cousins has the opportunity to put up some of the best numbers of his career this season in what will likely be a more pass-heavy offense, he is best left on benches this week if you have another option. The Green Bay Packers defense is going to be one of the tougher units in the league this season and features perhaps the best trio of cornerbacks in the league. There are better options this week with more upside than Cousins.
