Drafting a tight end in fantasy football can sometimes be difficult. It is the toughest position to draft because there are so few reliable options that you may need to reach at one or use a middle-round pick on players with upside. The following pits two middle-round tight ends head-to-head in a fantasy football ADP value battle. Read on to see whether Dalton Schultz or T.J. Hockensnon is the preferred TE1 target in fantasy drafts at their current ADP values.

One of last year’s biggest fantasy football surprises came from Dalton Schultz, who was a premiere target for Dak Prescott’s passing offense. What was so surprising was that he wasn’t even expected to be the number one tight end in the Dallas offense, by some analysts. Missing only one game last year, Schultz was about as consistent as can get when it came to target share, as he had five or more targets in all but three games. It showed, as he finished sixth in targets among tight ends.
What was also nice was his ability to find the end zone, which he did eight times (second-most among TEs). If that’s not enough, he also finished third in receptions, with 78.
His final stat line is extremely impressive considering how jam-packed the Cowboys were in offensive weapons. This year, Schultz has an opportunity to truly explode in the Dallas offense. Last year, Schultz was considered a fourth option in the passing game when the whole team was healthy. Now, he is second. CeeDee Lamb is the only guy preceding him in that passing offense, with Cooper gone and Gallup still recovering from injuries. Behind them are inexperienced guys who may barely sniff the field. The Dalton Schultz fantasy football outlook is high.

Before injury last season, T.J. Hockenson was a valuable tight end to own in fantasy football. Hockenson was able to score double-digits in eight of 12 weeks last year on a Lions team that struggled, to say the least. One thing to remember is that two of Hockenson’s duds came with Tim Boyle under center. Hockenson was a producer who used volume to put up production, as he only found the end zone four times last season. He was the clear number one guy in the passing offense.
Major questions have to be raised about how this year will go for Hockenson. How will an offense that is relatively at full health hurt his production, and how will he look following last season’s injury? Will the emergence of young star Amon-Ra St Brown hurt his volume? For a guy who was an eighth-round guy last year to be drafted even later this season shows how confident fantasy players are in Hockenson this year. Just remember this, while the Lions were struggling to stay in games, Hockenson was someone who was a major player in them keeping games close. That says a lot about how talented he is.
Should I Draft Dalton Schultz or T.J. Hockenson for Fantasy Football?
The clear and obvious pick is to go Dalton Schultz. However, when you look at the guys going around him, according to Fantasy Calculator, I would much rather go after the others. Darnell Mooney and Marquise Brown are two of the bigger names going after Schultz, and they have much better fantasy value. Dameon Pierce, a starting running back, is going after Schultz.
When you look at the guys going around Hockenson, it makes his selection look like a steal and a lot juicier. The guys around him are secondary running backs and third or fourth wide receivers. Hockenson is fully capable of averaging over 10 points per game even in an offense that raises many questions. One thing to remember is that Dan Campbell, his head coach loves his pass-catching value. I think the combo of Mooney and Hockenson looks a lot better than the combo of Schultz and Julio Jones, who Fantasy Football Calculator has higher than Hockenson.
