Duke vs NC State Prediction | March Madness Elite 8 Picks
When these teams met on Thursday of the ACC Tournament, you would have been called crazy if you predicted this Elite 8 matchup. NC State still needed to win on Friday and Saturday just to make the tournament and Duke just didn’t look like an Elite 8 team. Since then, the Wolfpack have been maybe the hottest team in the country while Duke has taken advantage of some breaks while also playing their best basketball.
In the first half of their Sweet 16 game with Houston, Duke trailed 16-10 and was looking outmatched. They were struggling to get good looks, turning the ball over, allowing points in the paint, and struggling to keep the Cougars off the glass. Then, Houston All-American guard Jamal Shead went out with an ankle injury and the entire game shifted. Duke was able to find success getting into their offensive sets and they stifled a Cougars offense that quite frankly lacked scoring options without Shead. To the Blue Devils’ credit, in a South Region that has witnessed chaos, they have played their best basketball and taken care of business against inferior opponents. They have a trio of guards that can compete with anyone in the country and Sophomore big Kyle Filipkowski is getting back to playing up to his potential.
There’s not much to be said about North Carolina State’s run that hasn’t already been mentioned. It’s been an unprecedented run to the Elite 8 that required pulling out a tight win against lowly Louisville and banking in a three at the buzzer to force overtime against Virginia in the ACC Tournament. The two DJs, Burns and Horne, are carrying the offensive load for the Wolfpack and together can score from all three levels at a high volume. NC State’s role players are also playing their best basketball at the right time, contributing heavily with rebounding, making shots, and defense.
I’ve picked against NC State in each of their first three NCAA Tournament games and they continue to prove me wrong. I’m going to give them a chance to do that once again as they hope to punch a ticket to the Final Four. I think Duke is scoring the ball at too efficient of a rate for the Wolfpack to keep up and will be locked in defensively.
