As the regular season of ACC basketball comes to an end, we have a solid idea of who will represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament. Given their current records in the ACC basketball standings, the conference likely has locks in Duke, Louisville, Clemson and Wake Forest. Outside of those teams, who else is making the tournament for the ACC? Joe Lunardi currently is projecting Duke, Louisville, Clemson and Wake Forest in the field. He also has SMU and North Carolina as a part of his “first four out.”
The ACC once again has a great schedule that can go a long way in determining the ACC Tournament bracket. With North Carolina and SMU both having opportunities to bolster their shaky resumes, the ACC could see six teams enter the tournament bracket projections. Let’s take a look at the ACC basketball standings, top headlines from the past week and games to keep an eye on for this week.
ACC Basketball News and Weekly Headlines
Duke Destroys Miami On the Road
If there were any doubts that the Duke Blue Devils are the class of the ACC, they were blown out of the water once again on Monday night. After dismantling Illinois by 43 points, Duke went to Miami and beat them to the tune of a 97-60 blowout victory.
The Blue Devils led the whole way in this game and started it off right with a quick 15-2 run to open the game. While Miami got the lead down to 22-14, Duke quickly put together a 7-0 run and the game was over by halftime. The Blue Devils shot 56% from the field and an incredible 15/25 (60%) from behind the arc.
Duke is rolling on all cylinders right now as they have only lost one game in their last 22 matchups. During that time, they’ve won just two of those games by single digits with one of those wins coming over current #1 Auburn. With just three games left to go in the regular season, it appears the ACC regular season title is already partially in Duke’s hands.
North Carolina Basketball Fends Off Florida State to Keep Tournament Hopes Alive
RJ Davis scored 20 points and Seth Trimble pitched in 17 off the bench as the North Carolina Tar Heels took down Florida State on the road 96-85. Jamir Watkins led the way for the Seminoles with 26 on his own but only one other player scored in double figures for Florida State.
With the win, North Carolina basketball keeps their hopes of a NCAA Tournament berth alive…for now. While the Tar Heels have now won four games in a row, they will likely need wins in their next two against Miami and on the road against Virginia Tech to even remotely have a chance outside of winning the ACC tournament.
The game Tar Heels fans will be circling comes in the last game of the season when Hubert Davis’ squad faces off against their bitter rivals Duke at home to finish the season. A win in that game or a deep run in the ACC tournament would likely be enough for North Carolina basketball to get into the dance once again.
