Players in the NBA love dropping hints to stir up frenzies on social media. The most recent player to do so is former Boston Celtics center Al Horford. Horford, who opted out of his player-option on June 18th, began following both Zion Williamson and Jrue Holiday, leading many to speculate how high the New Orleans Pelicans are on Horford’s preferred destinations.

Why it Makes Sense

Horford has already proven he is an All-Star-caliber player. At this point, his biggest goal is to win a championship. Unfortunately, for Horford, there are not many ideal locations for him to earn something resembling a max contract and compete for a title. The Knicks, Suns, Bulls and Mavericks are all going to struggle this year and not even Horford can save them.

But the Pelicans? That just might work.

The Pelicans are already one of the most intriguing teams entering the 2019-20 season. After trading Davis and expertly maneuvering draft day, the Pelicans will feature a team of young players that are all hungry to have a big year; Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Jaxson Hayes and Nickel Alexander-Walker.

Oh, and they drafted a guy named Zion Williamson with the number one overall pick.

Horford would also be joining forces with Jrue Holiday, who is an extremely talented point guard, and E’Twaun Moore, who will also provide veteran leadership and scoring off the bench.

If Horford is looking to compete for a title while making the money he deserves, the Pelicans are his best (and only) option.

Why it Does NOT Make Sense

Horford is a great player and an even better leader. However, he didn’t want to “babysit the kids” in Boston, hence his opt-out. Who is to say he wouldn’t be doing just that in New Orleans?

At 33 years old, Horford might be staring down his last big pay day. Does he really want to roll the dice on a team full of players that features Holiday as the most experienced player in the playoffs?
