Wide receiver Devin Funchess and the Green Bay Packers have officially come to terms. In short, Funchess is given another one-year prove-it deal for $2.5 million, with incentives built in.

Devin Funchess Contract Details

Funchess was given a one-year prove-it deal from the Indianapolis Colts last season. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1. With a make-or-break season ahead, Funchess has decided to join the Green and Gold for a team-friendly $2.5 million.

The former Carolina Panthers wide receiver is betting on himself in this one. The contract has incentives built into it, making it worth up to $6.25 million.

How Funchess Fits in Green Bay

The Packers’ 2019 receiving corps was among the worst in the league, despite the team finishing a game away from the Super Bowl. Funchess immediately slides in as the second option, after Davante Adams. However, the Packers could decide to get creative with the soon-to-be 26-year-old.

Matt LaFleur loves big wide receivers, so it’s not surprising that he showed interest in the 6-foot-4 Funchess. However, it’s the fact that the Packers did not make a move for a tight end that makes this signing interesting.

Funchess played tight end in college for Michigan, then converted to wide receiver with Carolina. Could the Packers play Funchess in tight and play him outside? It seems like a cost-effective option that could benefit both parties, since Funchess isn’t exactly a talented route runner and the Packers’ have need at the position.
